I am sick of all these people who use their charity work to shove their religions and politics down people's throats. Shouldn't volunteers help others out of the goodness of their hearts or in the name of community spirit?
personally, I get really pissed off when I get told 'Jesus loves you' and other stuff like that. If I buy something in a charity shop or make a donation to a cause, that should just be the end of it.

whats worse is those bastards who approach you on the street asking for a minute of your time... a minute - sure, a minute........its more like 20 minute and twenty pounds!!!
i don't have nuffin against the chaRITIES - greenpeace, samartins etc but having these guys muscle into you when you're walking along the street is just not on.
someone suggested that when you get asked for a minute of your time, you pull out an egg timer and say _right, go_!

    I agree.
Authorities seem to turn a blind eye when organisations impose religion on people at the same time as helping them. If the local shelter for the homeless began preaching nazi beliefs instead of christianity they'd probably have something to say about the matter.
The most annoying of them all has to be Jehovahs Witnesses. Telling them that you believed in blood transfusions used to be enough to remove them from your doorstep but now I'm having to resort to shutting the door in their face - this makes me feel pretty bad but how else do you get rid of them???

They were in my area distributing blatantly homophobic literature (saying AIDS was god's punishment on homosexuals) - so I told them I was gay when they called round. They left very quickly, in fear and panic.
I thoroughly recommend using their own prejudices against them. Above all, never let them into the house, and do not take literature from them or they will come back.

We foumd that all it takes is one LONG visit. By the time my other half had finished denegrading there beliefs and subtley insulting them for an hour, over tea and biscuits (I can't remember if they drink tea, isn't it a stimulant?) They ended up looking at there watches, frequently, shuffling uncomfortably and saying "we really must go now". It was great fun and they've never knocked on our door again.
;O)

The best thing to do with these people is to tell them you are a pagan. Seriously. And if they dont stay and chat, you can always leave them with a copy of the "Witchtower" for them to peruse as they knock on yet more doors.
And as for the "AIDS is a punishment for homosexuality" thing - thats totally wrong. But you cant blame them for thinking that... they were probably lossers in a past life or something.
Still, the Jehovaz Witnessezz (Westside) can still do something for society if they try...
COMMUNITY SERVICE

Best thing to do is open the door wearing a long black robe, have your dog run about with a couple of horns on its head (a goat's better if you can get one, and shout at your naked kids to get back on that alter - scares the shit out of them!

Talking about the whole charity thing though, the worst I've come accross are the Sally Army. They run a place in Portobello Road which has food and stuff for homeless. Basically these poor people cant get fed and watered before they've thanked god and sungh a few hymns - that is really sick.

I'm involved with load of community and voluntary work in my local area (Milton Keynes) working towards bettering the lives of young peple. I carry out this work to simply help others - I do not expect any recognition and I am totally against these organisations who have another motive when fighting for their cause!!! - People will find religion if they want it.

I have received recognition for my work which I'm extremely proud of - I hope other people give a bit of their time to others - we all have so many skills to share.

E-mail me with any thoughts: craigab@hotmail.com

    Well done Craig. <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif">

We are involved it a charity called the Chernobyl Childrens Life Line. We are a link in Bedfordshire (I mention that because we are geographically close). We are bringing a group of children from Belarus to the UK for a month of rest and recuperation, away from the radioactivity. The main charity has brought over more that 11,000 children since 1992. Each link has to raise the funds to bring over their group of kids (but we aren't very good at fundraising).

Our kids are due over in July.

    Keep up the good work.

OK no-one wants religion thrust down their throats... but don't knock those who are truly trying to help others. The Sally Army do a heck of alot for others and the ones I know do not expect people to sing for their supper. I work for a charity working with young people and it is predominately Christian BUT we provide a service that does not depend on young people having the Bible forced on them. I guess sometimes it's easy to sit back and moan but maybe some of that energy could be used to actually do something yourself.
    With respect!

As you can see from our postings, Craig & I do do something useful, and don't often blow our own trumpets.

With regards to the sally army, I have had personal experience of this ruthless bible touting bunch. If people want religion there are a few organisations which combine good works with Christianity (or any other religion) they could try the Church, they are usually in easily identifiable buildings, and tend to be very kind and helpful people who do not need to wear uniforms or spend alot of their money on trumpets, tambourines and lawsuits.

OK... I guess the Sally Army that is in my town is a little better than the ones that you have encountered. At Christmas they gave the whole day to 'working' by laying on an amazing meal and entertainment for those who were going to be alone on that day. I take my hat off to them. There's alot more to them than uniforms and instruments.

Did you know the reason that they originally wore uniforms was because people generally respect people in uniforms - in days gone by of course - and they were able to work in alot of dangerous situations.

    With respect.
