Giving blood

BillieTheBotBillieTheBot Posts: 8,721 Bot
We have these ppl come to our college every so often who are collecting blood. I'd like to give blood, but I'm on prozac. What are the conditions for giving blood (my friend says you can't if you smoke cannabis)?
Beep boop. I'm a bot.

http://www.blood.co.uk/ is the URL for the national blood service's website. It doesn't really say anything about cannabis but there is a lot of interesting information..

When they screen donated blood they don't do drugs tests on it, all they do is screen for things like Hepetitus A/B/C or HIV virus, if they find any virus then they contact the person in question and dispose of the blood......

All blood is also cleaned of impurities so its in its pure plasma state...

Sometimes people report a slight dizzyness/tiredness feeling after donating blood, but you'll soon recover...

((( Just felt like replying as this forum hasn't had anything said in it for ages... and I'm waiting for you all to finish school/college/uni as I'm bored )))

I think it's like a year after piercings. You can never give blood if you've injected drugs. Uhm, and you an start giving once your 17

They use this seperation machine, I forget what its called cause I haven't been working in an operating theatre for almost a year, basically the machine spills the blood over several moduales, as it spins the various blood particles seperate and the non-required particles are disposed of.

Hey,
I feel quite strongly about giving blood cos I was saved by having blood transfusions when i was 2. I spoke to some of my friends about it though and they said that they wouldn't be willing to go through giving blood even if it was going to save people. Does anyone else have these kind of views, or like religious ones that are against this kind of thing? Just thought it'd be interesting...

I'll gladly give blood quite happily as long as I can do it without missing work, but then that goes for quite a lot of things.

On a related matter, I recommend that any of you who do give blood also get your bone marrow typed. Many of the nastier cancers require bone marrow transplants, and that's even harder to match than blood or organ donation. Having a large pool of potential donors really helps.

it'd be foolhardy to say it didn't hurt, but it don't hurt much & you can always distract yourself while they put the needle in.

Everyone should carry an organ donor card too.

A happy donor speaks...

No it doesn't hurt much but if you are worried you can have a local anaesthetic.

You can't donate for six months after a tattoo. There are also restriction following piercings and some foreign travel.

You get a free cup of tea (always a bonus me thinks) and you can live in the knowledge that you may be saving a life.

I started to donate after my wife was given four units following childbirth. I nearly lost her at a time when she was most needed (and loved, of course). If it hadn't been for those donors, she wouldn't be here now and my children wouldn't have a mom. I'll never know who they were and I'll never be able to thank them. I guess it made me sit up and think, and the best thanks I could give is to follow their lead.

You never know - the life you save could be your mum's...

Any chance of a donor info stream on this site guys?
The triumphs of today will echo for eternity

I really wish I could give blood but just giving a tiny sample was enough to make me practically faint and have to lie down in the middle of the hospital car park My mum gives blood and I'm really proud (and jealous lol) of her. I inherit my stupid reaction from my dad, although he's also scared of needles whereas I'm not.

I wonder waht would happen if I took some drugs and gave blood. Do you reckon the person recieving it would get wrecked. Just a thought.

Duh, do you think it might get picked up during screening?

• Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Are they really rigorous on age?
I've seen their thing and you have to be a certain age/weight. I can't give at the moment because of piercing, but if you are erady and willing, will they really turn you away because of age/weight? I am neither old nor heavy enough, but I want to give blood next time I am able.

just thought i'd say i got a ickle card through the post the other day announcing that i'd given 2 pints of blood and was a great person

so there's an incentive for you all.

next time i give i'm going to ask to be put on the bone marrow donor list as well.

Hey, those ikkle red cards are way cool If you can give blood, then DO IT NOW! It doesnt hurt with the anasthetic, and its a great feeling knowing uve saved someones life.

The only interesting answers are those which destroy the questions.

I think you should get paid for giving blood it would encourage more people to do it.

i think that's horrible - people giving away bits of themselves for money.

To the man of kent, I thought u had 2 wait a year after having a tattoo before giving blood? The same with piercings as I heard it.
• Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I think thats true. Look at their website http://www.blood.co.uk if you want to know.

It matters not who won or lost, but how you place the blame.

Hey -

I too don't give blood for two reasons: I have anemia (an Iron definciency[SP?] in the blood), and I have a needle phobia (that's why I've never tried smack). I try to make up for it by volunteering at blood drives and all. The first time I worked one, I found out that you have to wait a year after getting tattos and/or piercings. I would recommend not smoking (spliff smoking) for about two weeks before giving blood, just to be safe. In America (that's where I am), they do toxicity screens at blood drives and hospitals. But I guess that really doesn't matter seeing as how you're in the UK and all. But if you ever find yourself giving blood in the US, remember.
P.S. - I think that it's really cool that you would think about giving blood. Most of the kids I know at home just laugh at you if you mention it.

On Blood

I am a very frequent blood donor. We might do things a little differently here in the States, but you CAN give blood if you smoke pot, as long as you're not stoned at the donation site. The machine you all are talking about is a tool in the process of apheresis, which does separate the many components of your blood. However, it does NOT dispose of the components it doesn't take from you, but returns them to you either in another arm or the same, depending on the sophistication of the machine. You can also give blood and take Prozac, as long as you write it on your pre-donation survey. They match the medications you take with known allergies of the recipient. If they know that the recipient is allergic to Prozac, for example, they will not give him or her that unit of blood. Let me know if you have any other questions...hphs05
