Cod is on the verge of extinction. DO NOT BUY IT!

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
You may not know this, but due to over-fishing and greed amongst fishing nations, Cod is heading the way of the Dodo, the dinasaur and the Amazon rainforest (well almost) - yep, extintion.

I urge you all not to buy it. Replace with Haddock for a similar taste and texture.

if no-one buys it then theres not much use in fishing the thing in the first place. Its there in the shp and its allready dead so whats the harm.

fuck it, survival of the fittest and a slappy slappy fish is no match for a human.

If i don't eat the fish now then it died for nothing!!! It will just rot and get thrown away!

You have to think slightly differently.... Harry had the answer in his first sentance: If you don't buy it, then the demand will decrease and that will mean the fishing of it will not be so intense or high priority.

The result will be that Cod stocks will have a chance to replenish. At the current fishing rate, there will be none left in roughly 5 years time.

but every individual cod will die sometime. they all die from predators and other methods. If cod go extict there will be none alive to die. If something doesn't even live then it can get dragged out of the sea. and a cods life kinda sucks just looking for food, thats all it does.

The best place for a cod is to be swimming in my belly!!!!

I just thought it was necessary for me to comment on this one seing as i work in a fish and chip shop! Your right, the cod popualtion is decreasing and its becoming a BIT of a worry to us - prices are gunna end up going through the roof - its geting really expensive to buy now!
The thing is though - i know for a fact - very few people like haddock as much - i dont eat fish but apparently it has a skin and a slightly stronger flavour which many of our customers do not like. Maybe their just fussy but you'd be surprised by the numbers of people who wait for cod to be cooked specially if theres none ready.
I sound well sad now dont i?! Just thought id state my view - oh and can i just say j9 - you amase me! How do you know so much about everything?! Im well impressed! Keep your comments cummin - the board would be lost without you! Lucyxxx

Awwwww I'm really embarrassed now.

I think that I know a little about alot of things. Unfortunately I don't know enough about any one thing to get any higher qualifications I stopped at 'O'Levels, which gives the game away. I guess the reason I have so much useless unformation stored, is because I'm so old. lol

Thank you lucy, you are very kind.

j9

PS, I prefer cod because haddock is always a bit dry, I really hope that someone will come up with a good, workable idea.

Well J9, nice to see I'm not the only one who's still around! Sorry I haven't been about, I've been trying to get a life - failed miserably so now I'm back haunting the old net pages of old!! (JK)

Now, as for the Seals - somehow I don't think Seal and chips will kind of be quite as attractive to your average chippy fan (like Spirit)? How abou bits of seal shaped like a cod..... ok i'll get my coat.

As for cod itself, as far as I see it, there are perhaps 3 ways forward to preserve this endangered species:

1) Boycott / ban and campaign (very difficult, time-consuming and inefficient - look at fox hunting campaign, after 25 years, slowly they are getting somewhere)

2) EU and EC trade regulation to try to reduce the illegal harvesting of such fish crops. As J9 correctly pointed out, other nations blatantly ignore their "quotas". Mind you, it's not just Russian fishing boats that practice the illegal routines, it's all over Europe.

3) Cloning of Cod - "a portion of chips and a large Dolly The Cod please". Has a bit of a ring to it, doesn't it!? Might taste a bit wolly though!

I think chip shop owners will have a hard time and so will consumers as prices start rising.

There are a few of the oldens still here (no offence peatee, RedEd, Girl, SexyCinderella, Daze etc). We have quite a community spirit now.

I've given up on trying to get a life lol. The moment I step out of the door, someone asks me to do something.

I still wonder why they they only serve haddock in Scotland chippies (well, in the Aberdeen area anyway). Maybe someone should do some kind of leaflet to hand out at the chip shop, or maybe make sure that the owners are aware of the problem & that it might be an idea if they recommended haddock. They could make it significantly cheaper as an incentive?

I think I'll go & find some "not so serious" topics to respond to now

As my name may suggest, I take great interest in this subject. There is a report about this on one of the sites I regularly visit. http://www.electronicfishcake.com

Just go to the News Archive section and you should find it.

From The Times

Job fears over planned cuts in fish quotas

Britain's fishing fleet faces big losses in income and jobs after the
European Commission yesterday proposed cuts in catches of Cod by up to 75 per cent
to avert threatened collapses in stocks. "To have a fishing industry, we
need fish. Fishermen have acknowledged they cannot catch their quotas and
stocks need to be rebuilt." "For some fish the Commission is recommending
catches lower than scientists have advised," Doug Beveridge, assistant chief
executive of the National Federation of Fishermen's Organisations, said.

I went shopping yesterday and tried to by Haddock instead of Cod, but I am amazed at how many fish products are cod based - almost 90% of them I would say. We are in trouble methinks.

Try buying fish steaks & fish fingers that don't say "cod". The ones that say white fish are probably coley, pollack, haddock or just a mix.

Well, I'm in the clear for the time being - I much prefer haddock to cod. The chippy I go to has both ready, but before I moved 3 years ago I always used to wait for them to do me a haddock specially.

I'm not sure what Asda put in their farm store fish fingers, I think anything that is white enough.

Hey h0

My nations wealth is mainly based on those fishes in the sea(that's stupid, I know)! Eat them or face the Icelandic army! (j/k)

I don't remember eating cod, ever... The fishes look quite funny though ;)
After trying to think it might be true that those fishes are facing losses among their relatives... Am too tired to think though. And yes! haddock is kuhl, buy mroe of it, but don't buy too much cause that's what I'd like to eat in the future =))))

Take care and good luck making the folks see that extinction is forever!

Really? I didn't know that.

If you want to eat ethically, buy 'dolphin friendly tuna' and avoid companies who exploit ppl in the third world (like nestle & some fag companies).

OPEN YOUR MIND...
