Best volunteering experience?

I once helped kids to learn to read, that was really great, gave me a a real sense of achievement. Also visited an old lady who lived on her own - used to call round once a week and have tea, do odd jobs, take her out, that sort of thing. Sounds pretty dull, but I got a lot out of it, especially as she seemed to really enjoy the company. I just hope when I'm old and alone that epople will visit me!

What's your best experience? If you've never given time to charity what puts you off?

    I'm part of our community action team at uni, we organise various events, some one off or others every week, or help at groups in the community where an extra pair of hands are needed. My best must have been the tea-dance last year for the elderly in the area, we spent the afternoon filling up teacups (man those oldies can drink) and learning new dance moves(they can boogie to! quite.) It was the best fun and worth it to hear at the end how they were already planning what to wear next year!

    The only time I've volounteered for n e thing in recent years was coachin tennis to kids for free.
    Used to do it every friday night from 5-7, it was quite good fun but then the parents complained to the club, who had asked me to do it, bcos I was a bad role model for the kids. A lot of the kids I was coachin had friends around my age, n cos of past problems , the parents didn't think I was 'suibtable' to coach tennis to there kids. Resulting from that I was asked not to go to the junior sessions n e more, although some of the parents did actually hire me to give private coaching on a different night.

    Every summer I help out at the summer scheme at a special needs school near me. Each person gets assigned to a child and you take them out each to day to different places like Alton Towers, Knowsley Safari Park, various parks round here etc. I absolutely love it. Since I want to be a special needs teacher, its great experience for me and even though its really hard work I love it and enjoy it loads !

    I do the same as elisakate and I help out in the summers with george house who are a place that help familys who have got links with HIV. Some of the children who go there who have got HIV dont know and its heartbreaking really because they are all lovely.

    I used to help at a school for children with disabilities - help in class, on outings (horse riding etc.) which was very rewarding, if difficult sometimes. I've also helped quite a bit since I was 15 at Sussex Otters in Chichester, West Sussex which is a swimming club for elderly / disabled / recuperating people. Haven't got much time at the moment though (workaholic finalist <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/frown.gif"&gt; with other commitments as well).
