Working for free!

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Some of you may or may not know that i spend some of my time each work dedicated to the fight against and prevention of crime. I am a member of the special constabulary, in short i'm a police officer. I wear the uniform and have all the duties of a regular copper. The only real differences are i only do about 8hours a week, don't get paid and cannot do any firearms training! Many of you will question my sanity, i mean being a policeman let alone not getting paid for it, To those of you who do i can only hint at how rewarding it has been for me. Yeah i get some stick about it and i've lost a few friends, but then again were they good friends to start with?! I get a feeling of pride and self-fullfillment when i help resolve a situation, i feel good that instead of whinging about how bad society is i'm trying to help do something about it. I've met some damned fine people along the way, it's giving me a good insight and advantage towards my chosen career, it's given me new awareness of what really goes on and it has helped pull me out of my shell and into the big, bad, old world. I shall stop droning on about it but would like to add that:

Volunteering isn't a dirty word! and that it can help you as much as other people.

edited cause like a twit i spelt it-in! doh.

Marmite - that's really great! I'd always imagined special constables as being older people, i don't know why. Anyway, i'm curious - what made you get into it in the first place? Are there other people who do it who are the same age as you? I'm wondering about doing something like this in the future.

Not to mention it can allow you to develop skills that you may need to have or use in your chosen career. Employers always like to get something for nothing.

    Great stuff marmite.

Well there are plenty of others in my age group, both specials and regulars. I got into it because of my interest in the police(my mums fault cause of all those damned tv programmes!), i thought it would be good insight into it(basically trying the job without totally comiting myself to it) and would look good on my application form <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/biggrin.gif"> I would highly recommend it to anyone considering a career in anything law related. I think the sad fact is that the majority of the specials are older because they tend to care more about society than the younger generations do.

How did you do the training Marmite? Did you have to go somewhere for a couple of weeks or is it over time?

Do you get to take the handcuffs and batons home with you?

The training was done in several ways, some days, some weekends and alot of it on the job so to speak. As for the handcuffs well i could take them home at the weekends i suppose

Volunteering is ace - I was an adviser with the Citizens Advice Bureau for three years and I really miss it now, but I know what you mean Marmite about doing something. I helped homeless people get accommodation, made debt more manageable (for everyone except myself!), stopped people geting kicked out of their homes...it has made me determined to study (social work) now. I bet your cv looks great now!

Hey Marmite! I have only just moved here (in August), I am from Manhester born and bread!! Bristol is gorgeous though, live funky music...it could be the place for me (until I am rich and live in San Fransisco, Chicago, New York, Havana!!!) I a m still trying to settle in - little things a re weird like how "lush" is every other word here! The humour is a bit more "refined" I think as well (they're a dirty bunch in the north (god I miss it!!)as you will know from Sheffield!
