people with mental health problems. Not many people do because of misconceptions. it's very rewarding.

    what kind of problems peacechild? (just vaguely - i know you cant discuss precise details!) its just that i've been doing some voluntary work for NCH recently, helping at a playscheme for kids with everything from mild ADHD to severe autism or CP.

    you're right about the misconceptions - everyone thinks they're stupid or something, and all they see is the disability, not the true child beneath. they're often more aware of their surroundings than I am!

    very rewarding indeed - in fact, one of the most fun and worthwhile things i've done for years. bloody knackers you out though!

    I think this proves the arguments against socialism wrong then, that people would become lazy and do no work. People do lots of work with out payment. The protesters at anti-road camps were another example they recieved no fiancial insentive but did what they did becuase they wanted to.

    Nice one! I've done voluntary work in a Summer School for disabled kids for the past 3 years...kids with everything like you described.

    I absolutely love it and its really rewarding too, I'd recommend anyone who thinks they might like that kinda thing to try it. The Summer School I help out with is at a special needs school I didn't know you could helpt out with NCH.

    First off Steelgate, lay off, this isn't the topic to push you "anti" views.

    I work with adults in 2 different day centre's. Who have a whole range of mental illnesses (sp?)from very mild to needing to be in an HDU. I also have finished training and am now a mental health advocate which is great, I help service user's (or whatever the PC name is at the moment)to get heard and listened too.

    I know that in the context of the whole wide world that the following may seem insignificant but it was to me very very rewarding; a service user who had not responded to me for nearly 9 months got up as I was leaving one day and said "thank you for making me laugh today"......maybe just maybe for a few moments I got through and that makes everything worthwhile.

    I would not change what I do, it makes me feel like I'm doing something worthwhile.

    I can leave all my personal views behind when I enter the day centre's and I will help to the best of my ability anyone of any race, colour or creed that needs help.

    If you have seen some of my posts in other forums I expect you may think I'm a right wing shit...but even right wing shit's can be caring.

    for once peacechild is an apt user name, I think.

    take care people and 10 out of 10 for the work you do.

    peacechild, i think you're right, and in a way these are the sorts of issues that are larger than politics, and the ones where you HAVE to lay aside any prejudices or presuppositions that you have. your political views dont matter in the sort of environment you work in, all that matters is that you can (and clearly do) care. the work you do sounds really rewarding - different kind from what i do, but every bit as valuable.
