Can I do 3??

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I got 1A* 3As 4Bs and 2Cs in my gcses so I'm apparantly meant to be doing 4 subjects at college. I am doing Psychology, History, Philosophy and Media. I hate philosophy. I know I want to go to university and i know I want to do history and then a pgce and become a teacher. I'm really sure of myself. Anyway, can I get in with 3 and general studies?? I really..am not happy right now.

a lot of universities dont accept general studies. and they will be looking at your results from year 13, for A2... AS is just for predictions really, and unis probably base their offers to some extent on the results you get at AS. 2 separate AS levels do not add to an A level equivalent... AS is at a different level to A2, its like a stepping stone between gcse and A level. ive not seen a uni yet that specifies having started 4 AS subjects. they generally just want 3 full A levels, which is now A2. if you think you can do 3 subjects better than you can doing 4 that youre not happy with, then talk to your parents and tutor, and/or year head about it, you may well be able to drop philosophy

Thanks for advice emma I'm going to talk to my tutor next week.

I read some places that general studies is recognised but not included in any conditional offers. SO, when it tells me they expect 21 units of study in year 12 and 18 in year 13- does that mean general studies gives me the extra? *aghh.. confusion. I don't even want to think about the stress of actually making decisions about this stuff this time next year!*

Oh and, I just read up on your life in your psychology post Glad you've sorted out what to do and good luck with all your stuff this year.

Have you ever confused a dream with life?

    im glad it helped

ack, i totally dont have any idea about units! lol.. im still running on old A level system! just as well im doing my AS and A2 in one year without too much hassle, its too confuzzling!

i definitely think its a good idea to talk to your tutor, they hopefully will have a clue about all this stuff!

thanks for the wishing of luck i just have to battle through boringness at asda and more boringness at school with stuff taking hours and hours that i could do in half the time :-\ thats the only problem with being in a class 2 years younger. ah well, at least i'll get a qualifcation out of it, and its better than just working at asda full time!! still cant wait to get out though

hope you sort it all out next week! let us know what happens

Maybe I can help - I have done both the old A-level (Gen Stud and Psyc) and new AS/A" in Sociology,Lit, and Theatre Studies.

Anyways - what they will do is take teh amalgamation of points from you top three alevels(A2) (i dont have the tarrifs with me ATM)

Most places will take 2 AS in lieu of a third Alevel, but want 2 AS+A2s and 2 ASs.

Its easier to go for four courses in the 1st year, and then carry three on to a2 in the second, therefore creating a wider base of knowlage.

MOST unis discount Gen Stud for entry, but it can take account if two candidates are particularly equal, and one has and the other doesn't.

    Hope that helps.
