I work for a temp agency and have been at my current placement for about 6 months...hopefully make me permanent!
I have to work for 13 weeks before i am entitled to holiday pay, which i supose is ok but i have since found out that i only get two weeks holiday pay per year, which i think is well shit! i work 38 hours like any permanent member of staff.
Also i don't get payed for bank holidays. So like at xmas, when i was all spent up on xmas pressies, i didn't get maped for nearly 2 weeks (1 week was holiday then it took longer for my cheque to clear coz of bank holidays) which again i think is shit.
Does anyone know if temps are entitled to bank holiday pay?
ALso, the placement i am at, is an American company and don't have May Day off, but i aint American and i want it off, not like i'll get double time or anything! that was totally irrelevant, but it pissed me off when i found out so i thought i'd share it with you!

I assume that you are being payed by an agency, the ones that found you the job & are currently being paid for having done so.
When I temped (or worked on contract) I didn't receive any holiday pay, some angencies add an amount into their calculations to cover holiday pay, then pass that on to you when you aren't working. If you didn't get this, you'd probably get a higher hourly rate instead.
I don't know what agencies get paid for your time but, suppose you are earning £10 per hour, the agency is probably charging the company £13 per hour.
As a temp you have far fewer rights than you would have as a permanent salaried member of staff, you wouldn't get redundancy pay because your contract is with the agency, not with the company you are working for. You probably don't get sick pay either (unless your agency has added that into their calculation as well).
When you become permanent with the company you will probably get less money, but you will also have more rights, you'll probably get more paid annual leave and you will get sick pay too. Your agency will also be paid a hefty finders fee as well.
The advantages of temping are higher pay, variety & flexibility, but the benefits of being permanent are more security (they can't sack you without going through a complicated procedure), eventual entitlement to redundancy pay (should the event occur), sick pay, maternity leave, holiday pay etc.
There are pros & cons & you are discovering some of the cons at the moment.

As much as i like being relied on, i don't feel i get paid enough for the responsibilty.
Should i get made permanent which is a strong possibilty at the mo, i will get £11,200 a year with all the perks you described, over twice what i am getting now.
The agency probably are charging them something like £10 an hour, i'm getting less than half that.
I just had an interview for the job i'm doing now, but another temp got it, he had been there a year so i expected that. I have just applied for a similar position, in another dept, but because i am an external temp, it will go internally first, leaving me bottom of the elimination process.
My only advantage is that, although £11,200 sounds very nice, it is actually low paid grade as far as most positions in this company go, so hope fully as before when only myself and this other temp applied for it, not many will apply for this one either.
just leaving a job (permanent) that i get only statutory sick pay (about £50 per week or so i have been told) so not paid if i have 1-3 days off.
4 weeks holiday (including bank holidays so works out to 12 days per year) etc etc.
and it is a job i hate with the boss from hell.
could temping be any worse?!?!
considering that i am moving from the midlands to "hip n happenin ole london town?!"
