Work Experience....

Right, here we go...

I'm doing work experience for two weeks in September after I go back to school <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/biggrin.gif"&gt; <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/eek.gif">. I'm going to go be a computer hardware engineer and just wanted to ask what I can expect it to be like? Anything on what I can expect to be doing etc would help me cos I'm gettin a bit nervous about it <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/eek.gif">!

I know there are a few of you computer-type people around so thought I'd ask while I remember...

    Do ya want 2 hear my personal experience?

    (prob not but here goes)


    last summer i went 2 a bank, and i had 2 find the placement myself! my school (control freaks they r)made me go 4 an interview in my own time and they sent the bank all this crappy paper work they had 2 fill in!

    anyway i got there and all they made me do was clean out the stationary area, and write letters. At the time i tought it was well cool but i realise now that it was shit! We also had this crappy log book 2 fill in where we had 2 do things like draw a plan of the office and write about health and safety rules in the office.

    Then a teacher came 2 visit me and all she did was tell me how she liked my top, the fact that she was an totally unfasionable 40 year old meant that this was a bit of a blow to my self confidence.

    Some people i know got paid (one girl got £200)

    Anyway try 2 have fun and if your not happy with anything ring up whoever is in charge of the scheme @ your school and moan 2 them (wish i had)

    I'm an IT Support Technician and I get put in charge of the work experience people everytime they come...

    Its really difficult when you've got work experience people as you've got your own job to do as well as overlook the other person and make sure what their doing is right, you've got to explain to them about health and safety rules, fire exits, write a review book for them and talk with that persons teacher about their progress... and to top it off make it actually interesting...

    Most of the people I get I just try and give them some of the work I've been asked to do but more on the spreadsheet/database side (ie. things they'll actually use at school for GCSEs), I also take them everywhere I get called to for support jobs, explain what I'm doing and where possible get them to help and join in....

    It can be really difficult sometimes, just don't take it to heart if quite a bit of the time your just watching, its hard to explain to a young person just how much of an impact certain things are to the company, ie. if a machine went down its costing the company £60 an hour... or like what I experienced with a lad I had working for me called Jamie about him designing a CD cover for a company product cd-rom I'd built and it not being a suitable image for the company...

    If they have you just making cups of tea and stuff then do complain, just don't expect to be wiring machine hardware and being put in charge of a server.... <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif"&gt;

    Hey all.
    In England, I dont think people can be paid directly for work experience (cos it's meant to be voluntary, although schools make it less so), but doesnt the company get money for allowing the students to work with them for 2 weeks or so? Cos perhaps that's the money that the students are getting from the company...? As far as I can remember, I didnt get paid for my work experience, but I got a part time job out of it, so that was better in the long run.

    most people just get money 2 pay there "expenses" (sp) eg food and travel

    My work experience was in an electronics shop (TVs, Fridges, etc).
    They were all fairly old people there but I find that I actually get on better with adults than I do with people my own age.
    It was one of the best two weeks of my life.
    Now I`m working in Tesco and I love it there. There`s something very fulfilling about getting a paycheck at the end of the month <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif"&gt;
    Of course the pay sucks (£3.88) cos I`m under 18 and only part time but other than that its cool.

    i've actually been really lucky with my work experience. we did four lots (two in year 10, two in year 12). for the frst two, i went to wrok for an MP (who then gave me a job) and for a law firm (was a bit shite really). second batch, i went to work in a school in Hong Kong. talkaboutafuckinaholiday!
    and then went to work at Cherie Blair's law firm in London for a week. which was cool.

    my suggestions for work experience - do something totally unrelated to what you want to do for a career, because you'll probably find it a lot more fun, as you'll have little preconception of what the job entails. then, try and do something closer to your chosen career path. if poss, blag a job out of them, if not, then keep them on file, and when it comes to writing references for UCAS or jobs or whatever, get them to write you a short reference.

    I have Work Experience when I go back to school and I was really worrying about it because the fools at the Carreers Office lost my form and told me right at the end of term so I had to fill in a new one. I thought I wouldn't get the option I chose (which I didn't) but I did get another Vet placing. I didn't have much clue about what was in the job but I looked on the internet and saw what they do and from what I read on the job choices it said aid in minor operations etc...so I have a good idea of what I will have to do, so I'm just going to go in there and have some fun (with scalpels MUHAHAHAHAHA HA - ps.no animals will be hurt in this process)
