Navy

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I've decided to quit college (again), but this time I want to join the Navy as an artificer. Seems like a promising career with a good salary. I also get to see the world

The downside is I'll have to spend 10 weeks in Cornwall

Does anyone have any tips or advice for my chosen career?

Just get to know and love the Senior Service's fine traditions: rum, sodomy and the lash. (Churchill, btw)

No, I'm sure you'll find something good for you in it. At times you'll hate it and wonder why you took the shilling, but in the end you will be glad you did. At least, that's my experience, gleaned from many current- and ex-military friends and relatives.

But you don't know me so

Anyway, I can't leave after 6 months anyway I can leave before 6 months but after a being in the Navy for 6 months or more i have to stay for at least another 3.5 years so

Thanks MacKenZie, I know I will hate it at times but hey thats life! You can't enjoy every minute of your life no matter who you are!

I am definately gonna try and sign up. The only thing which is gonna stop me now is if I don't get one of the 4500 places available in the country I can dream and if I try hard enough I can do it

no, thankfully not anymore, but i knew you for over 3 months so i think i know what youre like slightly.

and i KNOW you cant leave after 6 months which is the whole point. youll get fed up and want to leave but not be able to, therefore will hate it more.

your life, your choice. do what you like with it, doesnt bother me. i gave up giving you advice a long time ago. you never took any of it then either

your man can leave any service he likes when he likes, it may take a few months but if you dont want to be there, then they wont want you there besides you may not even be put aboard a ship. I have a mate who has been in the navy for years and has nevr left gib on duty.

if you are going to jion any of the services, do so in sept. This will help you in two ways.
1: when you run up big hills carrying full kit, its nice to have abit of rain to cool you down.
2: it should be long sleeve order, which meens jumpers and trst me they are a lot easier to iron then rolling the sleeves up.

I disagree strongly, I was in the Royal Engineers and Royal Army Medical Corps for 2 years and I'd say by far that I prefered spring/summer to autumn/winter by far..

Admitily yes its cooler in the winter but what you've got to remember is:

    1) Shirt Sleeve order isn't difficult, its a piece of piss to iron, even if your in long sleeve they still usually ask you to remove your jumper to check if you've ironed it anyway.
    2) Its summer so the weather is usually 30 times better than winter so your kit would get as trashed in. Also forgot to add that if it is pissing it down and your with full kit and burgan (unlikely as you don't want to be a pongo - navy term for army) and you get wet feet... that hurts over a 30km tab I can asure you.. I'd rather it'd be dry!!!
    3) When you do your exercises outdoor its a lot more pleasurable cooking/sleeping when its dry than having it piss down on you.
    4) You'll spend a lot more time outdoors and doing sports than in the winter doing drill and getting muddy.

Trust me... Summer is far better...

i cant think of anything worse than being in the armed services tbh. i dont want someone giving me orders and seeing if ive ironed my shirts and making sure all my clothes and stuff is kept tidy! id so not survive in the services coz id just tell them to fuck off! both my parents were in the air force a long time ago and from their stories = worst job in the world for me.
