Working Hours

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
First time i've attempted to post to a board... too much of a lurker!

Anyway, I wondered if anyone could tell me if there's a certain amount of hours a person aged 17 can legally work per day. You know, max. of 8 hours or something like that. I got told that you can't work past midnight but i'm not sure if that's true or not.

Hope someone can help!

Jo

There are few restrictions on when 17 year olds can work. If you are under school leaving age (16) you can not be employed before 7 am or after 7 pm, for more than one hour before school or for more than 2 hours on a school day or Sunday.
People under 18 usually can't work in a bar. There may be some by-laws in your local area restricting your employment hours...these can be obtained from the local library, council or education office.
The low pay unit may also be able to help you: http://www.lowpayunit.org.uk

I really do have to raise this point! my g/f has left school and is on a college placement there, she works for them too however. Shes under 18 and they really do USE these young people alot! They tax her so much and are not interested in sorting the problem out they have never paid her propoerly since she started. She is only on £2.60 an hour! Honestly they dont give a shi*t!
I swear everyone should take note of this as its the truth I am so angry at them, its slavery and they dont even care about treating her right. start early finish late etc etc etc I could go on ranting but....

As long as people will continue working for them, they will carry on treating them that way.
Why should they pay more if they're getting away with it? It's not benefitting them.

Employees have rights, but they have to speak up in order to be heard.

i agree i keep telling her!but i have to say it seems under 18s have very few rights when it comes to work.
Im glad I did A-levels and kept away from work until i was 18, kept going by working at my school as a lunchtime supervisor for £5.10 per hour

Mr Nice: You really should encourage your g/f to speak out to her employer; it cant hurt.

Also, it is possible to get a decent pay for under 18's. For the past 4 months I have been working within a customer service department in one of the Littlewoods call centres (Preston); I started at 5 GBP/hour and am now on 5.28/hour, and the work really is interesting if you put your mind to it, and help the customers out
