Can someone please tell me why you have to be ancient to get anywhere in the world of work? You can be just as good as other people you work with, but because you are younger you have to fight twice as hard as anyone else to be noticed etc? Is this just a Northern thing or does anyone else have the same problem? Everyone goes on about age discrimination at work, when your over 50, but no=one seems to mention anything about age discimination for those of us under 25

Not all jobs are like this though. Some jobs overseas or helping charities look for younger people. Hairdressers recruit younger people too.
I don't know how old or well qualified you are so I can't give much advise on jobs.
Younger people are normally saught after. What you are talking about is more related to experience.
If you want to get noticed at work you need to stand up and work hard to show your initiative.
The older and more experienced people at your work place will more than likely have had to do this themselves when they were younger.
Most companies like younger people with not too many responsibilities outside of work so that they can dedicate themselves fully and also, it is easier to teach a young dog new tricks <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif">
And of course, the less experience you have the lower the salary you can command which is better for the company.
Also, people with a little bit more experience (e.g. those at 25+) know how to play the game a bit better and how to impress, so they are hard to compete with. In the end, you've just got to work your butt off to get somewhere.
I work for an electronics store in Nottingham. I've worked there for about 9 months and have to say that I know pretty much everything about my job, I am capapble of working independantly or as a team. I am 17. But what really pisses me off is the Christmas temps. Most of them are over 18, know fuck all about the job but get paid twice as much as me for doing less work. Now tell me that that is fair
it pisses me off too, although i dont have a job, but if i was in the same situation as you i probably would be extremely pissed off.
Its fairly easy to get a full time job when your young cause like you said they train you up. However in my experience it is very difficult to get a decent part time job because employers don't want to train us cause they know we will leave when we get our degree, A-Levels, GNVQ's or whatever.

Yeah, i know what you mean Poppy i'm 15/16, i had a job but i lost it, and i've been looking for one ever since, every store/shop you go into is looking for people during school hours,which is no good for us people still at school! And the jobs that are avalible are crap and the pay is pants!

Well, I wouldnt use the word "ancient", I assume you are talking about people middle-aged rather than actually really old people. I think it is easier for young people to get jobs than older people for 2 reasons. The first is that employers want people to work for them for as little as possible in alot of cases and take on younger people as there is NO minimum wage for under 18s which really does suck. (18+ = £3.20 ph, 21+ = £3.70ph). The second is that younger people, generally, are "up" with modern technology (esp computering) and learn things quickers. That is, of course a general statemnet, and is not always true.
