Anyone been to Goa?

I went there twice at the beginning of 1999 and 2000, and can honestly say it was the best time I've had in my live, especially in 99. Lovely beaches and scenery, lovely food and drink, and for those of us with an interest in parties and certain substances , absolutely mindblowing raves at nights. We stayed in Vagator, near Anjuna, and it was just amazing.

Sadly in 2000 the authorities decided they did not like the backpacking scene anymore, banned all music after 10:00 p.m. and promoted 'silver-haired' tourism. I read a report on the papers recently and apparently the party scene has been killed off completely. No hippies, no full-moon parties, nothing but new tourist resorts and OAPs reading the Mail . Has anyone been there recently?
Beep boop. I'm a bot.

No, I've not been to Goa, where abouts is it?

Sounded great before it changed into Pleasantville!

Anyone know of any other intercontinental party locations? Mainstream or underground, happy-go-lucky desert islands or neo-apocalyptic industrial warehouses...?

Goa is on the west coast of India, some 400 miles south of Bombay. It used to be a Portuguese colony so it has an interesting mix of Indian and Western cultures. In the 60s it was discovered by hippies who made it in there and began their infamous full-moon parties. Weed, LSD (and later ecstasy) were everywhere and the region even developed their own version of techno/trance- hence the 'Goa Trance' CDs you can sometimes see in the shops. When I went there was a mix of Europeans, Israelis, Americans and Japanese, many of them living in Goa at least 6 months of the year.

Apparently most of them have now moved to Thailand. I've heard lots of good things about the place, and there are suppossed to be wicked parties there as well. The only thing, you would not want to be caught with drugs there...

Thailand is the most amazing place I've been to - keep going back there again and again - went for a whole month over Christmas + NY.

The party seen on Koh Pan Ngan is blinding...well if you can handle it This year there was a full moon two days before NYE, which was all a bit mental and then followed by
NYE itself (the parties last a good 24 hours).

mmhhh...gotta get back there soon !

We're thinking of going there this winter, especially since Goa has been lost. Do you recommend Koh Pan Ngan then? I hear there are several islands one can head for when looking for full moon parties.
