Hey, I was just sitting here after reading Mindless' post about cutting right down on smoking and and Skive's statistics on Lung Cancer.
What made you smoke in the first place? This is not be being judgemental because I have one now and again but very few and far between. I started through that wonderful thing called peer pressue and it 'looked cool'
What are your reasons? Did you like the taste and is that why you carried on? Personally I hated it but again, it looked cool (it was quite a few years ago after all, i was young and naiive.
I think another influence for me is that both my parents are heavy smokers but they haven't been affected. Yet.
So smokers, join in on this discussion and it'll hopefully help Mindless with his battle to slow down and eventually quit.

funny thing is i smoke joints fine
When I started smoking properly, it was partly because I did enjoy it, and also because it gave a little bit of relaxation at college. I carried on because there was nothing better to do in the 3 hour breaks I had at college.
With the flawless plan of 'I'll quit when I start to feel addicted', I was suprised to discover that when I started to feel addicted, I couldn't quit.
I still enjoy one or two a day, the rest are just habit.
I can't say that I think smoking looks particularily 'cool' myself.
I had my very first cigarette draw with my mum when I was about 15.

I enjoy smoking cigarettes now just because I find smoking fun! The taste is minging, but I smoke very very light ones, so the taste isn't really an issue. I carry on smoking just because I enjoy it as a pass time. I guess I find it a cool thing to do , image-wise, but that's not why I do it personally.
but then i decided to stop because i didnt enjoy it, but last year i started up again because of alot of probs at home with my mum and dad spliting up, and i supose it was just my way of dealing with it. but now i find it hard not to smoke! so im hooked on them now!! xxx
i read a report on young people smoking once, and i just thought i would share it with you lot because i for one find it strikes home a little bit.
basically, what it says is that its easier for adults to say "no smokin for me" but for young people its not so easy. it goes on to say that smokin can be seen by a young teenager as a sense of achievement, as in the UK, USA etc, a lot of cultures dont have a really big to-do over becoming an adolescent. in some cultures a massive party, feast, congregation or whatever is used to celebrate the persons step into adulthood, which in turn creates a "milestone" between here and childhood (a good example of this is a Barmitza *spelt wrong i know*).
the fact that a young person masters the art of smoking (not bummin the cigarette, takin it down without coughin etc) is seen by many as a marker point they can show the world and say "im not a kid anymore". i remember the time when i crawled un-noticed into adolescence (a couple of years ago) and as far as i can remember it was just a regular day for me...no big fuss over it. this is why i started going out more with the local krew and being a bit more adventurous in mischief making; i showed the world that i had grown up and i had achieved something for myself.
i know that smoking wasnt my way of creating this "milestone" in my life to mark the "im not a child anymore" day, but i know quite a few people who did.
