Is this a new kind of Phone scam?

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Our landline just rang .. and an 0800 number came up

08000517733

And a guy spoke quite quickly but sounded like a real person - but now I think about it could have been a really well timed recording of some sort

He said something like - this is Simon hubbard?? ... we got some really good news for you just call freephone 08000517733 .. then missed the next bit and ended with don't worry if you missed the number just dial 1471 to get the number

What do you guys think? scam or not? - it looks like a freephone number.

0800 numbers are free phone, I havent heard of any scams of this nature and I deal with complaints for a telecoms company.

    Hope that helps xx

Dont you have a PAYG mobile you could call from?

It does sound a bit like a scam though, I never trust anyone who calls now.

Jeeeeezus Harold Christ. Why not just call it and find out?!

    OK, I'll do it.

It's a message telling you that you can claim back your bank charges for the last six years.

Be careful tho because companies like that who 'cold call' usually take a cut from the money you're entitled to without you knowing - which isn't illegal but is morally wrong

The call is probably free. The scam is probably that they charge you for a service you could do yourself pretty easily. But then that's life.

This is what I have found:

08000517733 - Action for consumers, name of representative Mike Anderton. These people are phone spammers, calling people on the TPS. They try to disguise the fact that they are touting for business because of recent possible high banking charge anomolies. Although it's a freefone number it doesn't detract from them acting

Still, not sure I'd trust someone whose mother lived in a cupboard...

08000s are generally no more expensive than 0800s
