Warning to kids sniffing solvents

Saw this article in the local paper. Nothing new really but to some people it may come as a surprise and is worth bearing in mind when slagging of ecstacy. I know when I was 14 I would sniff solvents but would never have touched 'deadly' ecstasy.

More young people are dying from solvent abuse than the party-drug ecstasy, a new report has revealed.

But the Bristol Drugs Project says the dangers are not highlighted because solvents are not a 'sexy' headline drug.

Figures have been released that show deaths in the south-west have gone from up from three to eight a year.

Nationally, the number of substance abuse deaths has leapt to 73 in the last 12 months – eight times more deaths than ecstasy.

Concerns are also high over the rising number of deaths linked to butane gas cigarette lighter refills, which accounted for 53 per cent of the deaths.

Jane Peters, from the Bristol Drugs Project, which gives help and advice to drug-users, said: "This is one of the hidden drugs that is often associated with young people at school taking it behind the bike sheds.

"The reality is that it is more dangerous than drugs such as cocaine and ecstasy but it is not part of popular culture and music so it is not in parents' minds.

I agree with you about solvents, they are a bad idea, kids take them cause they are cheap and easy to get hold of but carry so many risks....

I'm not sure about your opinions with 'deadly' Ecstasy as you put it, its not the Ecstasy that kills on its own, its a combinational factor with overheating or over-hydration.

As your stats state, the UK has approx 9 deaths a year from Ecstasy and I'm not sure how accurate that is, having said that the older stats from the govenment say that between 1988 and 1998 under 80 people died. Well over 2 million people use Ecstasy every weekend and usually take about 2-3 tablets each session, this amount of people has increased dramatically in the last 3 years and all older stats are out of date... <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif">

    I'd recommend reading:
    http://www.thesite.org/ubb/Forum8/HTML/000326.html

    and visiting:
    http://www.esctasy.org

I'm not stating that Ecstasy is safe because it isn't and I'm not saying that people should take it, but I know its statistically safer than many of the others and doesn't deserve the 'deadly' stereotype it gets.

Most of the things you hear about the drug and indeed most are myths or one-sided opinions often made by people who have never tried or taken ecstasy before.

I myself do take the drug reguarly, I've been taking it for about 5 years and have researched into the subject quite heavily and other users here including lolly and skive and will tell you like it is... <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/smile.gif">

The govement and press have the wrong attitudes on drugs and no matter what they say they will never win the war over recreational drug use, which I believe in moderation should be perfectly acceptable and some drugs more so than drinking or smoking.

I agree with all you said - I use ecstacy myself - in the past a lot more than now. I termed it 'deadly' ecstasy as an ironic refernece to when I was 13/14 and the press/ government/ parents etc scared me off doing drugs like E. However I was not at all afraid of sniffing some lighter fuel!! This for me highlights what a joke the media and governments are and how ignorant and irresponsible they are.

8 years on and still nothing's changed - E is still 'deadly' in the eyes of the media and parents and perhaps, like when I was young, in the eyes of most kids. However lighter fuels are thought of as much safer!!

I also agree with your legalising drugs bit.

My best mate died in March from inhaling lighter gas. His girfriend who was expecting his first kid came out from college to meet him and found him slumped in his car at the weel with a cn in his lap.

It's unpedictable stuff. It's not as easy to take precautions to reduce the risk as it is with drugs such as ecstasy. Anyone thinking of doing that knows the dangers has got to be loony.

    Be careful people!

Im with Justin (as always) on the E side of things... not even gonna start or Ill b here for ages lmfao!

As for solvents....they r fucking horrible things to abuse and I also knew a bloke who dies through doing shit like lighter fuel. A long long time ago I was well into that shitty stuff and reckon I came close to killing myself one particular night, apparently I went out for a good 10-15 mins at least but I dont remember a thing to be honest, thats probably a good thing though OI guess lol!
