Public Information

Sorry if this has been discussed before but I tend not to read these threads because I'm rarely interested. Been there, done that, bought the T'shirt then sold it for the money etc...

However, I would like to know what you all think about the public information available regarding drugs. Do you feel that it is honest or is it biased?

How would you improve it?

    Biased! Most definately.

Most kids find out about drugs through their mates and siblings. Coz drugs are illegal and most relatively new, parents don't know fuck all about drugs. Except what they're told from the government and media which of course is also biased and crap. How can are society make a judgment on drugs when most of society dosn't properly understand them.
Coz a lot of drug education is crap. When kids find out the truth they're going to pay even less atention to the info.

Education is too heavilly laced with scare stories and bullshit.

Personally I think that public info on drugs its a bit too one sided. They give all the bad shit, a lot of which is very far fetched and inaccurate when really they should give veiws from people who have expereinced it and have both sides of the story.
Our drugs education at school was shit and only made me want to go and do it even more, but I think thats just me getting that lmfao!
I guess the idea is not to encourage drugs therefore they say all the bad and little good and use shock tactics but a lot of the time that dont really work in my oppinion. People should be able to get info from all sides and then make a decision based on the truth not only hear the bad stuff. If more time was spent on how to use drugs safely rather than how to stop people doing them at all I reckon less people would be in danger. At the end of the day, people will always take drugs regardless of the shock tactics, dangers or wheter its illegal or not. The importanat thing should be making sure they do it safely if they r gonna do it in my oppinion

Ok, so do you think that we've learned anything from cigarette/alcohol information then?

i think IF the pub info is biased, then it shouyld stay so.....

if it were to change this would only result in increasing instances of drug use/abuse.

i take drugs because i want to, despite the dangers. however i would never reccommend to anyone else that they take them. it is a risk i personally have decided to take, but i do not like to see others take them. if they can live their lives happily without the influence of drugs then that's great and i'nm more than happy for it to stay that way.

the govt can continue to put other people off doing drugs, because they are dangerous, and i'm more than happy for them to do that.

i sure as hell hope they'll put my kids off doing drugs, even if their info aint totally true.

I totally agree with u on most of this but I think the question really is are they actually acheiveing anything trying to put people off them? Surely giving both sides and focusing more on how to do them safely would prevent the worst from happening? Im not saying u r wrong or anything, just thinking out loud really

yeah i know wot ur saying. i'm just not sure of the answer.

i dont think you can really be sure though how anyone will react, and it could be in many cases, that by NOT giving the scare stories, people will see drugs as carrying less risk, and be more prepares to take the chance.

i s'pose we all have the right to the whole truth, but do we always want the whole truth?
    Shock therapy often works best.

our drugs education at school was quite good, they told us both the positives and the negatives. we were taught to weigh up the pros and cons and then make our own decisions, and accept the consequences. same with sex really, we were told that it was obviously a pleasurable thing, but had its consequences. and how there were things you could do to make the bad stuff less likely, but you had to be mature enough to deal with the consequences.

but i think if people want to do drugs, then they're gonna do them. you cant use scare tactics... and if oyu tell them the truth, theres always gonna be some people who will take the risks to experience the good effects. it also depends on who they hang round with either, if they "get in with a bad crowd" like mums are fond of saying, then theyre more likely to take drugs because of peer pressure. same with anything really.

so i think you have to give both sides of the story with things like this.

Out of my mind. Back in five minutes.

what i think happens a lot is, the drug educators focus so much on the downsides and saying "drugs are baaaaaad".

and kids know this, but then later on they will find out about the GOOD sides from friends etc, and THEN they will be more likely to experiment, as opposed to if the education had been well balanced in the first place.

I kind of agree with what has been said here.

All the while we teach kids that "Drugs are bad, m'kay" they will use then, just to rebel.

FOr years we have been saying, and educating children that smoking is bad and yet there is still a market for cigarettes amongst the young. I don't think that ANYONE can really deny that smoking is bad for you, and it's the same principle with 'illegal' drugs.

We are all aware that drug use has a downside but if you cannot give people all the information to make a decision based on fact, they will experiment just to find out for themselves.

    F.

I can only speak for myself ont this but I only did drugs coz I was curious. I'm not saying that it isn't because they want to rebel coz some most likely do, but I reckon it's natural to be curious about drugs. Animals do it and people have been doing it for thousands of years. As long as there are means to get high in this world, people will. You might choose not to do drugs (I'm not sue if you do?) and I may not do one particular drug, but there will always be sombody in this world who'll do it.

What we need is informed decisions made on the truth rather than biased waffle fed to us as kids by the government or in particular the media. I believe this should be our right although.
