Just about every christmas you see articles about how nutmeg is a strong hallucinogen, but the all finish up by saying how it's bad - like politicians who say they've had a spliff or three, but didn't enjoy it.
I was just wondering what it was really like.

I have also heard that it can cause brain damage. The active ingredient is poisonous in high doses.
Definitely not recommended.

just do a "find on this page" on nutmeg & you will find the information -
myristicin (non-amine precursor of 3-methoxy-4,5-methylenedioxyamephatemine [MMDA]), elemicin, and safrole (non-amine precursor of 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine [MDA]).
and also
May cause temporary constipation and difficulty in urination. Nutmeg oils increase fat deposits on liver. Safrole is carcinogenic and toxic to liver. Beneficial as spice or in small amounts; not recommended as hallucinogen.

I had a life once, but I stopped feeding it so one day it just walked away.

Several years ago as a student i couldn't afford anything intoxicant-wise one day, and knew a few people that had got out of it on nutmeg. So together with a friend i downed a few tablespoons worth with hot milk. Note: this tastes very bad... nothing happened so after an hour or so we downed two more each with hot chocolate.
It tasted better but still nothing seemed to be happening, so we popped down to the store and bought a couple more packets of ground nutmeg (red i think from memory, which is not very reliable). It was dirt cheap. We took these home and had a few more laced hot chocolates. All this took place friday afternoon / early evening.
Around 11pm we noticed we had been staring at the open fire in my lounge for about two hours or so. My fellow scientist declared his extreme wastedness, to which i concurred. Around two hours later again we retired to our sleeping quarters, concluding the experiment had been more than successful.
But then things started to go awry. I felt very heavy and nauseous and began to hallucinate demons outside my bedroom trying to break in and do demonic stuff to me. I had a corner room at ground level with a path to another flat past my window, which probably didn't help. Also i hadn't eaten anything all day, so i had this extreme volcanic activity going on in my belly, i swear it was like the nutmeg had begun some kind of nuclear reaction. None of which actually hurt or anything, because it also has a sort of physical sensation-dulling effect.
Anyway, after a night of this sort of thing i slept until 10pm the next day (saturday), when my concerned flatmate woke me for a cup of tea. I think i had one sip before passing out again. On sunday i woke about 6pm and managed to have a cup of tea and a few bites of toast, before crashing again round 11pm. On the monday i had to pay rent at the bank, so i struggled out of bed and staggered down the hill into town. I saw a couple of friends on the road who later remarked that i looked like a (sickly) ghost. The people at the bank were all very nice to me and let me go to the front of the queue, however.
Tuesday i was functional again, but with something approaching a slightly spacey version of an alcohol hangover.
Then someone told me you could od with reasonably minimal quantities.
Morals of the story:
1. You will feel very bad doing it and won't bother again.
2. Keep an eye on granny when she makes that next batch of cookies!
3. Getting nutted on nutmeg helps you get to the front of the line at the bank faster.
Myristicin constitutes about two thirds of the aromatic ether fraction, but it cannot account entirely for the psychoactivity of nutmeg. A 400-mg dose of myristicin, almost twice the amount present in 20 gm of nutmeg (20 gm being assumed to be the quantity required to produce psychotropic effects) produces only mild effects\footnote {Schultes and Hofmann. The Botany and Chemistry of Hallucinogens. p. 121}. The author is am not aware of any trial involving an accurate mix of all of the known aromatic ethers. Those occurring at more than 10 mg per 20 g are myristicin (210 mg), elemicin (70 mg), safrole (39 mg), methyleugenol (18 mg), and methylisoeugenol (11 mg). Safrole is probably not psychoactive, so elemicin might be worth investigating, thought it is doubtful that it alone can account for the activity.
The only known mechanism of metabolization of these compounds is the detoxification of safrole to piperonylic acid, a reaction which also shows the capability of oxidizing olefinic side chains. If this same degenerative process will act on myristicin, or elemicin, then a possible intermediate (a vinyl alcohol) could undergo transamination producing 3,4,5-trimethoxyamphetamine, which is known to have similar effects.
Whatever it is that causes the psychotropic effect, it is known that various terpenes enhance the absorption. 5-20 grams of the ground nutmeg may be ingested for mild intoxication lasting about twelve hours and followed by deep sleep. The achieve the equivalent experience of 1-marijuana cigarette, one would have to imbibe 10 grams of nutmeg. May cause dizziness, flushes, dry mouth, accelerated heartbeat, temporary constipation and difficulty in urination, nausea, and panic. Beneficial as a spice but not recommended in large amounts as a hallucinogen. Safrole may be carcinogenic, and is definitely a hepatotoxin in larger amounts. Due to the severe side-effects, nutmeg is not a popular street drug. It is used most by underage students who are looking for a legal means of altering their consciousness as well as by prisoners who can acquire it more easily than illegal substances.

well, dr deceiver, that description is definitely consistent with my laboratory observations.
for the record, we had approximately two 40g packets between us. i'd dispute the direct comparison to marijuana, tho. it's definitely more physically effective than weed. and "mild intoxication" is a pretty conservative estimation imho. more like "mild stupification". unless i just had the bad stuff <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/wink.gif">
