they are a muscle relaxant, and allow you to skip foreplay with tense partners.

Why would you want to skip foreplay??!!!! and if a partner is tense, surely it is not the right time!!!!

It dilates the blood vessels & that is what causes the rush, but this also puts a strain on the heart. It also happens to be the antidote for cyanide poisoning. From that I can only assume that the toxic effect of cyanide is to constrict the blood vessels.

*biology head on*

cyanide doesnt constrict the blood vessels, its a respiratory inhibitor that stops oxygen from flowing around the body in the blood properly. (just done an exam includiing extreme details of respiration hehe). it "inhibits the oxidative processes of the cells". i read that amyl nitrate (poppers) has been used for treating cyanide poisoning, but that it has no scientific proof it works. i guess people just thought that more blood could flow around the body if the blood vessels were dilated. not much good if theres no oxygen in this blood though! <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/rolleyes.gif">

anyway sorry for getting all biochemical!

but yeah that "tense partners" and foreplay thing is kinda worrying....

If you don't know where you're going, you'll probably end up somewhere else.

When I worked in Microbiology Quality Control at Amersham International (previously the Radiochemical Centre) the only antidote we had in the lab for cyanide poisoning was amyl. I can only assume as the level of safety was almost intense and that it was a highly scientific environment, that there was good reason to have the amyl in the poisons cabinet.

i found the information on the use of amyl nitrate as an antidote to cyanide poisoning here:
http://www.allriskmgmt.co.uk/hse/firstaid/Posion.htm

and i just found this which explains better than i did how cyanide kills you!
Cyanide works by causing asphyxia at the cellular level; it binds to iron ions found in some enzymes (haemoglobin surely? GFM) and makes them unavailable for cellular respiration, essentially choking your cells. The cells try to survive by switching to a non-oxygen requiring metabolic pathway (the same one your muscles use when you're exercising faster than you can breathe in oxygen), but this quickly builds up lactic acid to toxic levels. The fastest-metabolising cells, brain and heart cells, are most quickly affected; and if they die, so do you.

Cyanide also has a direct poisonous effect on the central nervous system and depresses breathing, but this is overkill. As with carbon monoxide, some survivors have permanent nervous-system injury, such as memory deficits and tremor.

im just gonna leave it all out, the main part is above and the rest is all about how to kill yourself by the german euthanasia society!!!

If you don't know where you're going, you'll probably end up somewhere else.

Like you say gfm. probably not a good idea to post a site with info on euthanasia. So many guys who read these pages are depressed aren't they.

to save time of course - if you're hungry you don't order starters at lunch.

I've never used them, nor would advocate using them. Just explaining why they are used.
