Cosmetic surgery

I'm planning on having cosmetic surgery done, but I have no idea how to go about choosing a clinic - there are so many, how do I know which one is best?

I'd get a referral from my GP if I were planning on getting plastic surgery.

Depending on the type of surgery you're having, word of mouth is often a good way to find a surgeon (good ones don't need to advertise). When I was thinking about having breast surgery, I used the forums on Breasthealthonline. With cosmetic surgery becoming increasingly popular, it's always worth hearing the experiences of others, they tell more than an advert can.

Thats kind of what I was hoping for here - I don't know anyone who's had cosmetic surgery! :(
I'm definatly going to me gp, but I didn't realise they referred you to someone

I always thought they'd only refer you if it was health reasons not cosmetic reasons? (like for stuff related to burns/scars)

Depends. I think if it's affecting your mental health you can get it on the NHS as well.

I'm sure I read that somewhere (on here?) but can't really remember much about it.

I don't think mine is available on the NHS - I want to get my nose done, even though I would say it affects me due to my excessive worrying I don't think thats enough for free surgery! Also I'd have to wait aaaages. Paying for it isn't a problem thanks to me finishing uni in 2 months I can get a graduate loan woohoo. I just don't know which clinic is best

They can refer you to someone regardless of whether you're getting your op done on the NHS or not.

The Royal College of Surgeons says,

"It is advisable to seek a referral from your General Practitioner (GP). GPs have knowledge of the specialists in their areas and will be in the best position to choose the one most appropriate for you. They can also make sure any important information on your medical condition is passed to the surgeon and help care for you if you have any problems or need advice after the procedure. It is never a good idea to choose a surgeon on price alone and you should be wary of the claims made in advertisements."

    Otherwise you could look here.

i'm having my breasts done next month with the transform clinic in london, the surgeon i'm having had done jordan's last boob job and i found him to be friendly and i liked his work, go and look around a few places and see where you feel comfortable at and stuff because if you feel just a slight bit uneasy with them then don't go with them.
After my first consultation, my co-ordinator phoned me up just to see how i was doing and stuff and when i suggested wanting to see the surgeon again just to be sure of my decision she arranged me an appointment straight away which i thought was good because you need to be 100% sure before commiting to surgery.

I was gonna get me nose done a couple of years ago, but I realised theres nowt wrong and I'm just paranoid. But I researched online, if you go to the BAAPS website, and remember to find a surgeon whos registered with them. I also managed to book a consultation with the Harley Medical Group really easy, they seemed really professional and helpful, so just check out some websites

I had mine done about 5 years ago. wouldn't like to say who the surgeon was though. all i'll say is think carefully about it. i became real obsessed with having it done but played it down to all my mates like it was just no big deal. the reality is, it is a big deal! your nose is pretty much the most significant thing on your face and depending on what you have done could change you quite dramatically. you're probably thinking 'good' i want to get rid of it - exactly how i felt at the time. but now a little older and wiser i think i could have lived with it - and it actually gave me quite a bit of character. the surgery itself was painless but you feel pretty rough for a week or so after. one massive downer for me was that ever since having it done i have post-nasal drip which means that my breath is not all that fresh pretty often - something i never had before! so i kinda exchanged one hang up for another. it's true what they say about accepting and loving yourself. anyway if you do want to go for it, i'd probably find an ENT surgeon who will pay attention to not only the aesthetics, but also the intricate workings of the nose! also, DO NOT aim for perfection - you will only be disappointed. and in the meantime look at all the famous people etc who have had great careers and are considered sex symbols who do have big/prominent noses! barbara streisand, adrian brody, gabriel byrne...the list goes on.

I only had something small done, but as go_away says, its best to get referals from people who have been to them. That way you know they aren't being paid, you can see the results and at least know they had a good experience.

    Either way good luck :)

Yeah, contrary to popular belief that is very difficult to get these days. Ditto breast enlargement (non-genetic issues) and tattoo removal...
