So in the hunt for a job, I've been emailed by a chap asking if we could have an informal catch up for a chance to say hello and meet the rest of his department.
Translation: is this an interview or not? Informal doesn't mean suit and tie, but what's best to wear to be on the safe side?

Do you have a job now where you would wear a suit - if so then I would wear one.
Or are you applying for the sort of job where everyone wears suits all the time?
If the answer to both of the above is no - i'd go for smart casual - good shoes nice trousers, shirt and maybe a jumper or jacket. But its hard without knowing more.
