My Mam Says...

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
My Mam says... that if I starve my self (only 4 a day or whatever) that my matabolism will slow down and I'll put weight on. Is this true? I mean, I would have thought if I ate nothing I would lose weight?!
Also, I'm curious, is there any calories in water?

I think your mum/mam is right. People who skip breakfast/ lunch regularly find they do not lose much weight. And it's not good for your blood glucose levels to be continually starving yourself. I expect 1 day of not eating would have little long term effect though. The best way to lose weight is through a balanced diet and by taking plenty of exercise.

There are no calories in water - and you should aim to drink about 8 glasses a day.

shes right. Short time starvation puts your body into famine mode..Your metabolism slows down so you wont starve. It doesnt use up so many calories as it would normally and you usually end up staying at around the same weight. It will also start eating away at your muscles when you run out of food.

Its a very bad idea to starve yourself for more than a day. One day of not eating wont do much either way apart from make you feel hungry.

Theres hardly any calories in water..like less than 0000.1 in every glass or something. Pepsi max has like 6 calories per 2 litres so water isnt a problem.

Hello, I know quite a bit about weight loss, I am not an expert or anything, but I have just clocked up my 49th pound loss. I know that it sounds like such a Cliche, but really, the only way to maintain or loose weight properly and so that your health does not suffer, is good food and a proper excersise regime. I have been doing a controlled diet for the last year and a half, and I have also been going to the Gym 4-6 times a week to do aerobics and toning classes. I don't live off salad or anything, I have proper food like everyone else, it is just all about quantity and also burning off the foods that you eat too much of. But please be carefull, I found it quite alarming that you feel the need to ask how many calories are in WATER !! It does work, it has worked for me, I have a problem and find it very hard to loose weight, people have lost as much as I have in half the time, and that is quite disheartening, but if you persevere you can make it, but please don't go too far - we have all seen Geri lately. Prime example of taking it too far.

    Hope this helps a bit.

I've just started to exercise 3 times a week at my local gym and eat better foods, instead of junk food all the time. Although, I know sometimes I skip dinner or break fast here and there which is quite dodgy but is a habbit. I wouldn't consider my self fat, I'm 10 and a half stone and 5"7 in height which makes me apparently "ok". I asked about the calories in water because I drink a lot of it and was always curious, I'm not that obsessive! lol.
Anyway, I wanna lose about a stone so that I feel more self confident... I dunno, I guess I just have low self esteam and I think mostly everyone is better looking or thinner than me. <IMG alt="image" alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/frown.gif">

How long do you think it will take me to reach my target?

Just Me, I'd just like to say well done, thank god and congratulations of being the first person i've met on this site who's actually lost weight the PROPER way. It's refreshing to see that not all people are idiots.

I'm trying not to be sexist, but why is it generally guys who go for the excersise and controlled diet thing, and the girls that decide to starve themselves?

If there's anything more important than my ego around here, i want it caught and shot now

Girls care more about the way they look than guys and believe that starving is a quicker way to loose weight then exercising, even when it's not.... I guess it comes down to female insucurities and lack of correct weight loss information?

I just answered someone else with this, so incase you do not read theirs -

it has taken me a year and a half, but that is because I have a problem which makes it really hard to loose weight. other people in our group have done it in half the time.

I usually eat things like :

Breakfast: Small Bowl of Start Cereal, and a Crumpet, Hot Water with a slice of lemon.

Lunch : Small Jacket Pot, with Spaghetti/Tuna, Heinze Noodles (Very Low In Fat)Cottage cheese with Crispbreads, Lots of fruit.

    Dinner : things Like :

Turkey - Lower In fat than Chicken/Beef Stir fry with Lots of veg and Rice/ Jacket Pots/ Cous Cous/ Noodles. we also eat a lot of Fish like Steamed or Grilled, Oven Chips - the McCain in the Blue bag are really nice, also Blue Dragon Sachet Sauces are really low in fat if you like the oriental type of food.

also you need to drink a lot of water, as much as you can really. and Hot water with a slice of lemon is really good for you first thing in the morning, i actually drink this in the day aswell, because i do not like tea or coffee. , i do know what it is like, coming down from 12st 11lbs, to 9st 4lbs, i am the lowest i have ever been, and i am only 5ft 1in tall. but it is something i will have to maintain for the rest of my life, i can never just give up and hope for the best, or i will be straight back up there.

Sometimes it's not about doing the right thing, and everyone pigs out now and again, just not everyday.

I really hope this helps you

    Good Luck.

Oh And by the way - your weight sounds just fine to me, well within you healthy balance, but I also know that it is a personal thing, and it does not really matter what anyone else says.

    Just Me.
