im going to turkey next week and supposed to have had the hepatitis A vaccinaation but i havent had it and now its too late because it was a late booking and apparently wont have enough time to get into my system for it to work.

they told me to stay away from the water becuase it is a water-born disease that causes liver damage but im just wondering what are the chances of actually catching something like this, and what other precautions can i take?!? (im a bit of a worrier)

    Hiya Drifter,

Contamination in food and water is one of the main causes of illness, and responsible for nasties such as diarrhoea and vomiting. Keep an eye out for tap water, many countries have germs in their water and these might get you via drinking it and using it to brush their teeth. Beware of ice in drinks, this is another way people can sometimes get caught out...

In some countries, tap water can carry germs that cause hepatitis A, I'm not sure if this is the case where you going but its worth knowing especially if you haven't had your jabs.

Some more holiday tips I found on a health website:

    Holiday Health Tips

Although you are on holiday to relax, it is necessary to take a few precautions so your holiday is not spoilt.

    * Watch what you eat and drink, this includes water in pools, lakes, rivers and the sea. Diarrhoea, Cholera, Typhoid and Hepatitis A can all be caught from food and water.

    * Always wash your hands after going to the toilet, before handling food and before eating.

    * If you have any doubts about the water available for drinking, cleaning teeth - boil it, sterilise it with disinfectant tablets or use bottled water - preferably carbonated and in sealed containers.

    * Avoid ice unless you are sure it is made from safe water.

    * Eat freshly cooked food which is thoroughly cooked and still hot.

    * Avoid food that has been kept warm.

    * Avoid uncooked food unless you can peel or shell it yourself.

    * Avoid ice-cream from unreliable sources such as kiosks. Buy fron shops or cafes.

    * Avoid - or boil unpasteurised milk.

    * Fish and shellfish can be suspect in some countries. Uncooked shellfish, such as oysters are a particular hazard.

I'd say but keep an eye out really, I hope this helps, don't let it ruin your holiday and have a great time..

Dont worry too much, just avoid tap water and salads, and such like, in hotel restaurants. And enjoy urself!

It matters not who won or lost, but how you place the blame.
