I've had thrush and not treated it and it has just .. gone. Does this mean it's more likely to recur?

once you've got rid of it, you can reduse the risk of it coming back by wearing cotton knickers & don't wear tights, only stockings.

and don't use perfumed soap cos that can affect your natural bacteria.

if you have to have a course of antibiotics, get your doctor to prescribe something for thrush too, just in case it comes back after the anti-biotics. you don't have to use it & if you don't, then you have it there, in the cupboard for next time.

its caused by a yeast called candida, usually candida albicans, but the next most common is candida tropicalis.

it thrives in warm moist conditions, hence vaginal thrush being fairly common. oral thrush is also common, specially in babies.

symptoms are intense itchiness & then soreness and a discharge like thin cottage cheese. the body's natural bacteria in the vagina is lactobacillus (hence the reason that live yoghurt as a cure is popular) which tends to keep the vagina acid, so inhibiting the growth of the yeast.

alot of people carry the yeast in their gut which is one of the reasons that wiping front to back is so important.

the most common times for contracting vaginal thrush are during the first few weeks of a new sexual partner, during times of stress when the balance of the body's bacteria is upset and after a course of broad spectrum antibiotics which can kill off friendly bacteria as well as whichever one the antibiotics are aimed at.

it is not necessarily a sexually transmitted disease, but, if you are in a sexual relationship it is imperative that your partner use a suitable cream at the same time otherwise he can harbour the yeast without symptons and pass it back to you. also thrush for men can be more serious.

    phew, i thinks thats all.

I recently had Thrush, too... not fun at all.
I had no idea that leaving it untreated made it more likely to come back. Your body should naturally re-adjust the candida levels, but if it's really uncomfortable, then treatment is good.
Natural (especially if it's live) yoghurt is very effective, that's what I used. There is a really good Thrush page that adivses a number of alternative natural methods.
