Dilemma

edited March 27 in Work & Study
Back in 2004 I had about 5 months left before graduating from college when I saw something I was interested in at the time beind advertised. An Air Traffic Controling test to pick out a few who could study to become legal ATCs in Iceland.
However I had to be graduated from College so that was it! Boohoo. :(

So instead I started a business degree in the fall of 2005 and will graduate this summer 2007. It's been nice and I've started having some ideas what I want to do -but not too many. Been considering going abroad for a bit or work while I decide what I want to specialise in. It'd probably be finance related.

And today I saw that they are hosting another test for Air Traffic Controling placements. :impissed: There's no guarantee that I will make it through the test if I decide to apply to take it and I'm wondering if I should just go for it and see what comes out of it or just continue what the route I'm going now? If I pass the test (big if, I probably shouldn't be thinking about that at this point :P), I don't know when the studying starts and that part might fuck up the end of my current degree.

grrr, I have four days to send in an application and I don't know if I'd be going on a wild goose chase if I apply. But I worry that if I don't do it I'll always be thinking 'what it'.

    Definately apply.

You don't have to accept the job if it gets offered to you and you might also find out that the actual job and trainining doesn't start untill after you have finished your degree anyway.

I know here in the UK its a very long application process with several stages of interviews and I think even possibly a residential section to test how you will fare under stress.

There's a quote by someone which fits well here: "It's better to regret the things you've done than the things you haven't." At least if you've done them you know facts about what could have been, whereas if you don't you'll only ever be able to wonder about it.

It's obviously something you're really interested in doing, if it's 3 years later and you're still strongly considering it. If you don't go for it this time you'll end up in another field and it may well be harder to go for it if it comes up again, as you may be living somewhere else in the world or be in a job with good promotion prospects or pay which you wouldn't want to leave to try out something else, in case the something else didn't work out or you didn't enjoy it. So I think now is the best time and I think you should go for it - you're not committing yourself to anything, and if you get through the test you can think about what to do about your degree, if in fact it turns out to be a problem. Like you say, you might not get through the test, but at least if you try you'll know and won't have to wonder what would have happened if you'd given it a go.

Thanks for the replies, guys! :)

These are six tests to pass, like how a person handles stress or works as a team. It's quite obvious that it's not a-given that I'll get in so why not? Otherwise I won't stop thinking about this.

However, I found out that I need to get a fresh eye examination and I might not be able to get that in time. I saw the ad so late (when deliberately checking if there was an upcoming exam, haha). But I sent an inquiry yesterday that bounced back, found another e-mail today that I'll see if bounces and if I haven't received anything later today I'll call this woman who takes care of this. I had a few questions and if I like the answers and it is indeed possible to do this I think I'll go for it!
Those entry tests should be an experience on their own. :p

I just told my mum and was quite nervous but she was really supportive and told me I should apply. Commented that it would be better if I could start after I graduate but that if I was willing to finish my BS degree she knew I could do it alongside.

I'm going to work on my application this weekend and try to finish it on Monday by getting a print of my criminal record and an eye exam pronto. That's the deadline and the more I've thought about this the worse I've felt about skipping this chance. I think I need to do this to either start or finish this chapter in my life.

I applied, I took one filtering test, had an interview where I had to explain my teenage blues in detail and ended with a stress/pressure test... I just got a phonecall saying I'm IN!!!! :D:D:D

I heard that 110 applied and 11 got in. I'm one of those and in the top 10%! I'm psyched beyond belief!

But oh my god, there is so much to do now in regards to my university!! I can't think straight now!

Wow well done - huge congratulations and all that.

When do you start and is there no way you couldn't finish university before you did.

    Thank you. :) I'm dead chuffed. :D

I will be starting this month so not much time to go! I'm getting all the details tomorrow at an introductory meeting so I will know better what to do. I am going to slow down with university but definitely plan to finish my degree.

    Oooo, I'm so excited!

Wow, well done you! To get in with those kind of odds is an incredibly achievement and proves you made the right decision to apply - you were obviously just what they were looking for. Huge congratulations!

I'll drop three of four courses at uni, and as fate would have it, I narrowly got squeezed into long distance learning with my favorite course of these four. yay! :yippe:

I start on Monday already with the ATC studies. It's going to be a lot different but I'm looking forward to meet some new people and face new challenges. I bet I'll be knackered in the coming weeks!
