its extremely rare in humans, there were 7 suspected cases, but they were all dismissed as other stuff.

i heard on the news that one of the slaughter men caught it becos one of the dead cows exploded infront of him and some of it went into his mouth. i reckon it is probaby only most likely to infect the ppl that are working closely with the animals. i doubt we are at risk

no, tigerlilly's right. there is a disease called hand foot and mouth disease which is related to foot and mouth, but not the same thing. i had it when i was little, it's no big thing. quite common in children, well up here in the countryside anyway.

i just thought i'd say....i know the person who's got the proper foot and mouth!!! cows are exploding everywhere up here 'cos they've been rotting for weeks. it smells BAD.

down with the pork and apple combination!!!

i was gonna say what shazza said about the guy who they think has got it (isnt it being confirmed tomorrow?) having caught it from the exploding cow... but i was also gonna say that it isnt the human version of foot and mouth like tigerlilly said, i didnt know what else it could have been tho, cheers opera for making that a bit clearer

I wonder if this guy who was slaughtering these animals knew what he was doing, I mean surely he should have been wearing proper safety clothes and equipment, such as a face mask to stop him breathing in the methane and other gasses released due to the decomposing carcusses, so how did the juice from the rotting cow get into his mouth? and didn't he sell his story a bit quick. Maybe I'm far to cynical for my own good.

Though I can't help but smile when I picture this cow going kabooom in good old hollywood fashion, call me sick but there is something mildly amusing about a cow exploding. Persil

in teh story i read he said he wasnt told he had to wear masks and no one else was wearing them apart from one teenaged lad, and he thought it was just coz he didnt like the smell. he worked with animals so he didnt mind the smell so he didnt put a mask on. it wasnt hims elling his story in the article i read, it was just something in the daily mail.

and while FMD might not be life threatening, it means he'll be infected all his life coz its incurable nd he wont be able towork with animals again because of this.

i think.

i dunno if it's incurable or not.....but i do know that he's worried farmers won't let him back on their farms again, whether he's infected or not.

Hand foot and mouth has got absolutely nothing to do with foot and mouth. They are two completely different viruses, they just have similar names, so people sometimes get a bit confused.

BTW, I had hand foot and mouth once, and it was grim. Bleurgh.

Also the *suspected* foot and mouth human victims have been cleared, it was only a rumour that was going round..

Foot and Mouth can't be trasmitted to humans... its just the press having a field day as per usual...

Hand foot & mouth (Enteroviral vesicular stomatitis with exanthem) is most commonly caused by an enterovirus called coxsackie, just thought you might like to know that

j9
PS Coxsackie is also a vilage on the Hudson River. Who'd want to live there?
