    Capitalism rocks. :D

And I don't find supporting a status quo regulating gambling or whatever to be incompatible with it...

Funny how you're only a free market nutter when it suits you. :D

Oh in principle, if someone wishes to establish a super casino I don't really have a problem. However, the priorities of the government appear to reflect bad governance. The government devoting so much energy to this one issue despite little public demand or interest seems strange. And the intensive lobbying by gambling firms hardly coincidental.

If Labour were consistently deregulating everything from gambling, the media and smoking in private businesses to the administration of schools and universities I'd applaud it. But, deregulating some things and imposing draconian regulation on others according to the preferences of lobbyists representing big businesses - as Labour has done is not something I support.

I'd agree with you about Labour. Although I still find it funny that you're critical of the political power of capital...while claiming to be a free market fundy.:D

I've never called myself a 'free market fundy.'

rent seeking is not a feature of a free market.

The whole thing makes me uneasy, the idea that a casino is the agent of regeneration seems bonkers.

Surely the whole point, the very reason for a casino is for people to loose, and loose big, I cant see how that can be used for regeneration.

The tax money and the tourism makes a big difference though. The "supercasino" in Melbourne provides about AUS$2bn tax revenue to the state of Victoria.

Yes, and Auz has more problem gamblers than any other country per head of population. You dont get one without the other.
