I'm so excited as well because it means I dont' have a super casino on my doorstep!!!!!!!!!!!

Manchester though - what a random decision I feel really sorry for blackpool - that was so the obvious place to put it and it would have been really good for the town.

yup blackpool should have had it, perfect location for it in my eyes, apparently they are still gonna keep pushing to get one there tho. Blackpool is really a sorry sight these days, i spent a lot of my childhood going there for days out and its a mess compared to what it used to be.

O2 just bought the name the actual place has been bought by the man who wanted to run the casino - prezzers friend the Texan. He is financing that part of the deal but has said he will only fund further development in the area if the casino goes ahead - that was to be more flats and restaurants and houses and stuff - but given the ridiculos price of houses in the area I can't imagine that they will have any difficulty persuading another developer to take the project on - minus the casion - which is definately a good thing.

I suppose its as good a way as any of letting the Rusholem drug dealers wash their money.

I assumed the Dome had paid for it fair and square, maybe the government isnt quite as bribe-able as I thought.

Not really that much of a suprise really, Blackpool would have been the ideal place for it though to give it some kind of positive reputation back.

    Yeah i would've thought blackpool too... :)

i don't understand why manchester got it actually.. i don't think it will really fit in. i mean we have quite a few casinos already in the city centre. this new one would be outside of the city centre.. i certainly won't be trecking there. i think blackpool would have been ideal.

It's going to be a whole resort with hotels, restaurants, shops etc I presume. People will travel from all over to go to it. Not your run of the mill schemey casino.

I think Manchester must have paid a lot of money to get their scheme bumped up ahead of schemes with far more merit. It should have gone to Blackpool.

Well, really, they shouldn't be building one at all.

Maybe they were worried about the social implications on Blackpool being more damaging. I believe it's one of the most deprived areas in the UK, and giving the population a chance to gamble away what little they have would be catastrophic.

the final report is here for anyone who wants to read it, think the decision is on page 108 onwards regarding the large regional casino, seems well thought through to me.

'Super' casino or not, I suspect it will end up looking nothing like the casinos in Vegas.

Not mad about the whole idea myself anyway.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
yeah doubt it'll be on that scale, will be impressive tho. People have said "we are not bringing vegas to the uk"

    i'm excited. I love casinos.

Probably just as well. The last thing we need here is twat magicians, past-their-best singers from the 60s and blokes with white tigers performing around :D

I'll be going to this when it's built, definitely.

Best way to go to casinos is with a certain amount (that you don't mind losing) in your pocket and no cards. Also make sure your with trustworthy friends who won't give in to your demands to borrow cash, and will tell you when to quit!
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Bit surprised in went to Manchester, but I'm sure Blackpool and London will get their own eventually.

I dont like casinos that much personally. I have learnt from personal experience just how much they can fuck lives up.

In principle I don't object to allowing super casinos. But, I do wonder, why the change to the existing gambling laws we had banning such establishments? It's not as if there is widespread public demand for 'super casinos.' The answer of course is lobbying. Casino operators have poured millions into lobbying the government, like the pharmaceutical companies bankrolled the anti-smoking campaign demanding an outright ban, gambling firms have too employed expensive Westminster lobbyists. Pharmaceutical companies are making a fortune of nicotine treatment doled out on the NHS, they know the ban will result in more people trying to give up and they know they'll sell a lot more nicotine patches. Gambling firms make billions and every extra outlet allowing people to gamble equals more profits... Aren't Labour great?

    Capitalism rocks. :D

And I don't find supporting a status quo regulating gambling or whatever to be incompatible with it...
