the thyroid gland is kind of near your throat and it produces a hormone called thyroxine. yeah what drifter said basically, controls your metabolism! im sure theres a connection with iodine too... and you can get either an underactive or overactive thyroid due to amount of iodine?? i dont know, i cant remember <IMG alt="image" alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/frown.gif">

iodine is what controls the activity of the thyroid.

i think if u have more iodine it increases your metabolism.

    It can cause health problems.

If u have an underactive thyroid it can make you overweight because the rate at which the body burns food for energy slows down. It can also give u poor circulation, and connective tissue can break down.

If u have an overactive thyroid it's basically the opposite. Iodine is needed to for natural growth and development and regulating the function of the thyroid gland.

God i sound like a walking health encyclopedia! (i work in heath food shop so i know all this stuff)
