Active genital herpes (or a herpes attack) means that there is a much higher risk of the virus being spread to a partner. There is also a risk of you spreading it to other parts of your own body such as your eyes or mouth.

If you have active cold sores (the other kind of herpes) there is a danger of spreading them to another person during kissing or oral sex.

For more information, read our factfiles: http://www.thesite.org/sex/sexual_health/genital_herpes.html http://www.thesite.org/health/skincare/cold_sores.html

Yeah. Well funny mate. Any way, how do you know if you have active herpes or not? All i see are a load of bumps like white heads. Does this mean that i cant have sex?

If it is definitely active herpes (you got a diagnosis from a doctor), then the advice is to avoid sex.

For more help and advice, call these people who should be able to help:

    Brook Advisory Centres

Centres offer young people advice, counselling and medical help around contraception, pregnancy, abortion and sexual health.

I dont wanna see a doctor though. I dont want some man feeling my dick and balls to find a load of bumps. Its a bit embarrasing especially if its my local gp. what would happen if i was going to have sex with a girl if i have active herpes?

are there any places where i can go thats not local so no one see's me. I'm only young.

You could infect her, and herpes can be much worse for women. (read the herpes article)

If you don't want to see your GP, that's OK. Ring Brook Advisory or look in your phone book for the nearest G.U.M. clinic. They will treat you in complete confidence. But don't leave it to chance.

Also, if i do have active herpes, does i have it forever? Do most most people with herpes have active herpes and do you have active herpes if you are a carrier? Sorry for bothering you all the time, its cos i got to keep my reputation. Cheers Karla

Most people who catch herpes only have a few active attacks (blisters or sores), but the virus does stay in your body for many years afterwards. If you have caught herpes, it's best to avoid sex during the attacks, and always use condoms when the herpes is not active.

But if you haven't even seen the doctor yet, you might not actually have herpes. So get down the clinic and put your mind at rest. Ten minutes of embarassment is a small price to pay.

i am wondering.. ok.. one guy had sex with a girl that has herpes and then he kissed me.. does that mean i could contract herpes? and how long does it take to show up?
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
oi smiffy, i've been to see my GP about something like this and they really just don't care, i mean do u have ANY idea about how many gentitals they see a day?

It is kinda embaressing of course but once it's over with you'll know that it was the best thing to do

If u don't go now u'll keep on putting it off, and that means an even longer period without sex.

So call your GP up and make an appointment, they don't tell your parents if that's what you're worried about, it's 100% confidential.

Life is like a pubic hair on a toilet seat, before too long, you get pissed off

As far as I know it is safe as long as there aren't any outward signs of the herpes virus.

Ie - if you kiss someone who has the coldsore herpes virus in their system, you won't get a coldsore, or catch the virus unless they actually have a coldsore when you kiss them. I believe the mechanics are the same with genital herpes.

That's what I would assume. But I am not a medical expert.
