Hi everyone,
Just to let you know about our next guest chat session. On Wed the 31st at 7pm we'll be having at chat session with Kelly Wright from SANELINE.
It'll be a chance for people to discuss any questions they might have around mental health, especially anything might have wanted to asked, but haven't known who to talk to.
Obviously it won't be possible for a chat like this to provide full one-to-one support for individual members - but we will be able to direct people to the best places for help.
Here's what Kelly has to say by way of an introduction -
'Hello! I'm Kelly. I've been working for SANE for about 4 years and I'm involved with lots of different projects, from responding to askTheSite messages (for mental health) and moderating the SANE discussion board, to going out and about, promoting SANELINE. I was also a SANELINE volunteer for a few years and have experienced mental illness myself, so I have developed a very deep understanding of mental ill health and the way it affects people's lives. Although my work can be challenging at times, for someone who is passionate about mental health and wellbeing, it's extremely rewarding. Some may say it?s sad, but I'm not ashamed to say, I LOVE my job!'
So come and join us next Wednesday at 7 by following the link below -

and if anyone has anything they want to ask but can't make the chat, feel free to post the question below (or if you'd prefer just drop me a PM) and we'll fit in as many questions as possible.

It is indeed next Tuesday - the 30th
*No it's not - it's Wednesday the 31st - honest guv
As Kelly has rightly pointed out the chat is Wednesday and not Tuesday. So until I find out I got it wrong again it's Wednesday the 31st.
First off, just because it's related to mental health doesn't mean it's just for people with mental health problems! Secondly, yeah it will be a moderated chat as with previous guests and will replace general chat on Wed. Free chat will be back on Sunday
lol. is it just for nutters or can anyone join in?
sorry
You can see previous examples here -

and again, just let us know the question you would want to ask
My question is:
Would I be treated differenly (in any way) if I went to see a counceller about my self harm instead of seeing a doctor? Or would they basically do the same thing?
So feel free to write your question in this thread, or PM it to me
ETA: doh!!
Meh.
I thought it was tomorrow at 7pm.
I've missed it
No you haven't , it is 31st - Jim changed the title after he posted that
I thought this as well.
I've just thought of another question:
I know I can't force anyone to understand, is there any simple way of explaining anything about mental health (in my case, self harm) to people who don't understand?
I'm not sure how to word this as a general and consisely worded question but I am a "full time" patient in a psychiatric day hospital (which in theory is good as it avoids being too institutionalised as I go home at night and at weekends and can do everyday things) but I feel that there is a lot I can't face doing due to social phobia triggered by the fact I don't like people asking me what I do e.g. if I went to get my hair cut the hair dresser would try to chat to me and no doubt say '...so what do you do?' and I wouldn't have any answer so I just avoid getting my hair cut.
So I guess my question is something like "Are there any tips for handling the stigma associated with having mental health problems and dealing with social phobia this may create?"
Are mental health problems/conditions hereditary? If so, which family members could it be passed on from, just close members or more distant ones? And which type of mental illnesses are most likely to run in families?
The rooms is open now guys, the questions will start in about ten mins
Tis not working for me
