People who don't like the police are often people who've been on the receiving end of police violence or corruption.

I am not sure I get this "all your mates will be police" thing, because generally in life a lot of your mates have similar professions,

No, not really. My mates range from teachers to accountants, designers to city recruitment consultants.

It was generally, not in every case. Most people will have a reasonable number of mates from the same profession partly because of the time spent with colleagues at work.

    Whatever.

Its fairly common for coppers to only socialise with other coppers. Its not something I just made up y'know.

No, but it's not unique to coppers.

Its more common for coppers from what I hear (from people who have been coppers).

Tbh i wouldn't give much of a care if people thought i was a cunt for being a copper. And if people didnt want to be a mate then well thats upto them ... though i really doubt that would happen.

Is a good job that would be really interesting. Would be rewarding to help out people.

The main job of a copper isn't to help old ladies across the road y'know.

My sister's old flatmate worked for the police in Edinburgh. He said he spends his whole time trying to tackle drugs, and he accepts it's an unwinnable battle, which must be pretty demoralizing. I had to stay at their place for a week once before moving into my flat, so I tried to be on my best behaviour. I picked up some papers though, which he had lying about one time, and read loads of stuff about all these drugs finds and busts in Edinburgh. He caught me and wasn't best pleased, because it was really confidential stuff. Was interesting seeing what the police estimated the price of some of these drugs at. I was sat thinking 'no chance, I can get them for far cheaper!'. ;)

Whoever mentioned Mr Doherty - I'd jump at the chance of arresting him, haha. Just so I could touch him! Yeah, that was the answer you all wanted so there it is. ;)

I know that I would rather be a police officer than a debt collector, or be working in a call centre all my life, which realistically is what is ahead of me.

If you want to help people, become a nurse or work with the homeless or something.

Debt collectors are scum. There are other choices y'know.

I am a debt collector. And I get paid very fucking well for it, thanks. :)

There aren't many other choices that would give me a bloody good pension at 55... if I carried on as I am now, I'll be working until I die. Fact.

Anyway, thanks for your opinion and all but I'm happy applying for the police, and I'm sure I'll be happy working as a police officer. Obviously I won't be losing any sleep over the fact that you don't like it.

My next door neighbour was special branch, lovely guy, used to talk to him about world war 2 planes when I was little :).

But most coppers I meet on the street tend to be rude, over assertive with their authority etc. "With power comes responsibility" - by overusing that power when it is not necessary I have lost a lot of respect for the police, they don't say 'please' or anything, everything is always an order.

I met another copper actually (biker) who was pretty nice (was also quite relaxed about me riding his 500cc motorbike without a licence ). He said traffic cops were cunts tho. *shrugs*

Personally I think the job you do is morally reprehensible.

Yeah, because obviously people should just be given money and then be allowed to keep it if they decide not to pay it back.

Sounds like a good plan to me Babyshambler, all the best with your application.

Do I care about what you think? No... especially when I get a big fat wage coming in every month.

 we've so got to have a p+d meet someday....

btw babyshambler if you think you'll be retiring from the force at 55 you're having a laugh, fact is the way the demographics are going there'll be one pensioner to every 4 working men/women soon, and you're assuming state pensions are still going to be around when you retire....the public sector pension deficit is already at £1 trillion and rising, so i wouldn't bet on it.

I think everything could do with calming down a bit, obviously Blagsta's comment is unpleasantly stereotypical, as is your reply - but hopefully this won't descend into bitching as I'm in no rush to close this thread.

It's not a state pension that I will be relying on...it will be a pension from the Police that I intend to contribute to. And if I do join, my contract will state I can retire at 55 or after 30 years service. Check it out, if you want to.

Fair enough, Jim. I just think that Blagsta is unnecessarily rude and his comments uncalled for.

my best mate recently applied to be a volunteer police person thingy but when it came to the application it said to put your absence for the last 2 years or something. she had quite a bit of time off due to a problem which is now under control - they rejected her because of that. and they said they don't discriminate, pah!

Sorry, rude in what way? You do a job which often ends up making people homeless. I think thats morally wrong.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
So Blagsta, what do you think they should do when people owe them money? just let them keep it?
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Just go for it if it's what you want to do. You're always going to come across people who aren't happy but it's your life.

I've come across a lot of police, some nice, some not so nice, the same as every other walk of life.

I work as a journalist and no doubt some people think journalists are all 'scum' because of a bad experience or some incidents they have heard of, but I know that I do my job the best I can and it's not up to me what others do. It's just stereotyping.
