Testicle Troubles...

Hi all, at the beginning of March I had what could best be descibed as a "painful incident" Basically put, I crushed my left testicle when sitting down.

It hurt for several hours, before I went to sleep, and seemed to have gone or at least dulled the next morning. However I knocked it again a few days later, and that time the pain came back with a vengeance in my testicle (and around my groin), and I also noticed it had swelled up somewhat. A week later, and after a slightly embarassing explanation to my Mum, I went and saw the Doctor about it. He was very good, and reassured me that there was nothing wrong, that knocks are both common and painful, and that it might take a week or two for the pain to subside - he also allayed my fears that the swelling and pain had anything to do with cancer and the like (I've read the part of this site relating to testicular cancer before and noted the symptoms).
Two weeks later, and although the pain had gone away slightly, a dull ache in the testicle remained on occasion, and I went back to see the Doctor. After another examination, he re-re-assured me that he could see nothing wrong, and proceeded to explain that I may be experiencing something called "symptom displacement" related to the depression and anxiety he's also treating me for; where the brain 'latches onto' certain aches and pains, has you looking for problems and worrying about your health, and ignores the underlying problem (in this case the depression and anxiety). I was given some tablets to ease the anxiety some more, and I went home feeling a bit better about things.

Unfortunately, for pretty much all of the last month I've been experiencing the same discomfort as before. If my left testicle gets so much as bumped, it will hurt for ages. It's getting quite difficult for me to wear jeans anymore (!), and I have to be really careful just sitting down. I've also had slight pains in my right testicle several times over the last month, and obviously I am quite... well, VERY worried about it all.

So I'm just wondering whether anyone has any experience with this type of thing? Could it be a bad injury that takes a long time to heal, the aforementioned "symptom displacement", could I have torn something in that area, or could it be something more sinister?
Any comments, advice or suggestions really would be great

If you've seen the doctor twice and he said it was fine, then it probably is.

The only other thing you could do would be to go to a different doctor.

I don't know what to advise here.

You say it's been two months since the original 'injury' and the dull ache is still there.

Like jeffrey says, maybe try going to a different doctor (or go back to the same one again) and explain how worried you are. They should be able to arrange an ultrasound for you.

I'm not really up on testicles myself but as has been said above, if it's really worrying you then you are completely entitled to getting a second opinion from a different doc.

It sounds really painful mate, I hope that you get it sorted out soon.

I've got the same problem, and I'm still not sorted. My doc put me on antibiotics about this time last year saying it was just an infection. Alas the pain, which meant I couldn't bear to have them touched, knocked or anything else involving any sort of contact, didn't go and after another 2 courses of increasingly strong antibiotics he sent me to hospital. After a consultation (where he said he could see nothing wrong) and 2 months later I got a scan, and I found out what was wrong with me. Apparently I have some sort of varicose vein in my left testicle which explains why it hurts when I do exercise, stand for long periods of time etc, but they can do something about it (after nearly a year). If this sounds familiar then tell your doc about it and see if he can send you to get a scan. That way you might find out, as I did, what's wrong with you for definite. Hope things get better mate, I know it's a pain in the arse

Just out of interest, TheKingOfGlasgow, what is the 'something' they can do to sort out the varicose vein, and (if this isn't too disgusting or personal a question) are there any visible signs? The reason I ask is because the veins on my left testicle seem to be a very red/purple colour, and a lot more prominent than on my right one - is that synonymous with what you have?

Anyway, thanks to everyone who's replied. I do feel somewhat more confident and positive about things, and I'm hoping to get a doctors appointment for tomorrow or the day after to try and get this sorted out.

I dunno yet, but i reckon it'll be surgery of some description. I can't see anything like you've described, but it doesn't sound good. I'd get down to the docs and tell him to get you to get a scan, only way to be sure, hope that helps.

Just got back from seeing the doctor now for another examination, have been told that there really is nothing wrong (and to reassure myself that every time I get a pain there), and that a scan is totally unnecessary. He looked for any signs of varicose veins or various lumps and bumps, and could find nothing... although I was advised to rest completely for a few days to give any injuries time to heal. So I guess that's that, hehe.
Thanks again to everyone who offered advice and encouragement, and to anyone else with concerns like mine; get yourself to the doctor - there's really nothing to be apprehensive about, they've seen it all before, and having peace of mind about it is great.
(And good luck King of Glasgow, hope everything works out well)
