Birth marks are cool, I will let you into a secret, I have one on my bum, it doesn't bother me. I have never had any complaints!

I think you can get them removed with lasers, though I'm not sure how much this costs...

they can be removed, i am not exatly sure what the procedure is but it is a pricy one. much similar to removing scars or those chicken pox scars.

my little sister has one covering one side of her face.
obviously it was a bit of a problem for her as she got older and made new friends...the comments and questions of innocent children have left her with an extremely strong shyness and she is always self conscious of it.

she went to this clinic (on the NHS) for that laser therapy free of charge (although she had a year long wait). first time they used it on her they put four dots (each one of stronger power than the one before) and told her to come back later (i dont know how much later).
from what she told me, it was like someone snapping a rubber band really hard on you (so if your one is in a VERY non-distinguishing feature place, you might have second thoughts).
They then applied the laser treament to her whole birthmark...they said she would get a kinda scab on it until it was healed. Well heres the not-so-nice bit: her whole cheek was scabbed over and after seeing a few nasty war pics in history lessons it reminded me a lot of a severe burn from fire or acid. its a VERY VERY VERY horrible looking thing, and after about 10 more of these treatments she stopped it.

Was the long wait, pain and nasty scabs worth it? No, not really. considering she went through it ten times you would think that it would have done more than fade a bit (believe me...you cant tell the difference from now and from before she had the laser treatment).

of course, I'm just a know-nothing newbie (not to mention the fact that laser technology may have advanced in the past 3 years)
but hey, maybe sooner or later one of the brilliantly helpful moderators will tell you to do a search and close the topic so that anyone with experience in these things cant post their bit of first hand knowledge.
    *ahem*
