Alternative therapies for period pain

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Ok, since i started at age 12, i've had crippling period pain every month. I've been to the doctor, and have been given scans, hormone tests, painkillers, you name it, and it's still really bad. i'm on the pill and only have one every three months, and all that seems to have done is make it worse, and it's really starting to get to me as i've just spent all day unable to move, lying on my bed. The only reason i've been able to get to the computer to post this is that i took some very strong painkillers that the doctor gave me that have the fun side effect of making me feel very dizzy.
I was wondering if anyone knew any homeopathic remedies or anything like that that might help? I've begun dreading them coming

I try to sleep mine off as much as possible...even in school....sneakily! have you tried the old ones, such as a hot water bottle, a warm bath and sometimes even doing excercise helps.

Let me know how you get on

Punk, have you just seen your GP about this because it might be good to see a specialist about your period pains because I'm sure at least 2 of the treatments you said should have worked by now. Did they ever say you may have had endometriosis or something? If I were you I would try to get a second opinion.

Yeah, i have seen my GP and she's referred me to a gynaecologist, but her answer was for me to have an exploratory op, and i don't really want to resort to that if there are any other options i can try first.

I can understand your reluctance about having the operation, but this seems to affect your life quite badly, even if it's only every 3 months. Might be worth considering.

Have you tried acupuncture? Homeopathy? Both worth a try.

thanks everyone, i'm seeing my GP on the 9th of may, and i'll ask her to refer me back to the gynaecologist and i'll talk to her about the op. GRRRR why do we have to go through things like this?!

I had the same problem. Had the exploratory op & found I had endometriosis. Have a look at www.endo.org.uk for more info. In answer to your question, yes there is are herbal helps available. Agnus Castus and milk thistle are meant to be good. Also something called 'Menastil', have a search on the internet for it. I got some the other day, will try it when the next dreaded period arrives! Take care x

Endometriosis is when the lining of the womb (which is shed when you have a period) gets out and attaches itself to other organs and stuff in your pelvic area. As these 'bits' of womb lining are still controlled by the hormones that make you have a period, they bleed when you have a period. This can cause severe pain and sometimes can lead to infertility probs. Sorry, don't mean to scare, just wanted to explain because 2 million women in the UK have endometriosis yet so many people have never heard of it. Go to the UK Endo Society website for more info. www.endo.org.uk

I have had the same thing happen to me I have found being in the bathtub in warm water to sooth the pain.It may take alot of these baths but it does work to sooth the pain away. Also I have heard this pain is just like having contractions when you are getting ready to deliver a baby.

they had these really cool things in Superdrug a while back, dont know if tey still have them. I think they were made by Lilets.

It was like this pad full of liquid stuff and you stuck it to yourself (not as bad as it sounds) and it would heat itself up while it was in contact with your skin and be all soothing. The beauty of it was that it was quite thin so you could wear it and go around like normal. Although i wouldnt recommend it with low slung trousers!

    Well, hope that helps anyway
