torn ligaments?

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
hey everyone, i'm new here by the way (my name is Megan im 18 and from northern ireland)
ANYWAYS...umm...i fell twice in the last month on the same knee and the first time didn't rest it properly which was probably why i fell again, anyway the second time i fell i went to casualty and they said i had put my kneecap out (ouch) and have torn ligaments. they told me to rest it as much as possible and walk on crutches...anyways this is a week and a half ago and it feels a little better and i'm back at work, i can walk, etc, but sometimes it really hurts. is there any kind of exercises i can do to make it better?
cheers!

    Hi SC

We don't know what ligaments you have torn, so of course we can't give you details of exercises to make it better! It might even make things much worse if you are given the wrong info.

What you need to do is speak to your hospital doctor who will refer you to a fully qualified physiotherapist - the only person who should really be giving you this kind of advice.

alas you are right and i should have thought of that...however the job i do is quite active (i work part time as a lifeguard) therefore i train quite reguarly...i just started two months ago and i'm on a 6 month probabtionary (SP?) period and im worried that if the doctor signs me off work (which he most likely will) then that will affect my chances of my job being made permanent? who do i talk to about something like this, my boss first or the doc?

Doctor first - he may not have to sign you off work.

The speak to your boss if he does.

My recommendation would to go and see a sports physio, as they are normally far better at assessing those sorts of injuries than normal doctors, and have experience in active rehabilitation. Depending on what the sports centre you work at is like (target market) they may actually have a list of recommended sports physios in the area.

Maybe you should see your doc and ask for his advice who will hopfully refer you to a physiotherapist, therefore you will not have the long wait of weeks before your first appointment.

That was just a little tip as i know from experiences that a physiotherapist has long waiting lists and it virtually impossible to get an appointment within a week. <IMG SRC="biggrin.gif" border="0" ALT="icon">

Hope it helps and you are running around soon.

Go see a specialist like Alistair, devil, etc have said.
I had to see one when I hurt my knee and it can drastically help your recovery.

They have all sorts of ways of gently exercising your joints so they get better. They made me run in a pool and do exercises with a rubber band thingy.

    It helped a lot.
