Stupid question from someone my age I know but...

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I thought I was pregnant a few weeks back because my period was late but then I came on my period 5 days ago and it was really heavy. It finished today but I go to the gym all the time and instead of losing weight i am putting it on and my boyfriend is saying that he thinks I am pregnant even though I had my period because one of his mates had that. How common is this to happen? Do you reckon he could be right (for once! lol). Thanx.

Two of my friends had their “periods” and they were pregnant. It is not a real period, I’m told, and there is some phrase for it, but yeah, it happens. However, that does not have to be your case. You may be just putting on muscle weight. Either way, if you are concerned, get checked out.

It's possible. Get a pregnancy test, even to just put your mind at rest.

    Good luck <IMG SRC="smile.gif" border="0" ALT="icon">

Get a test done (Gp's do them for free.)
A 'period' during pregnancy isn't a real period; there's a big long word for it. If only I could remember it... Put your mind at ease. You're 15, it could just be that you're putting on weight/muscle as teen girls such as us do at this stage.

*shudders at thought of losing her figure*
    *realises that's shallow*

    Good luck!

Because it feels like a period isn’t good enough to be of a comfort. To be a period, the vaginal bleeding would have to be a shedding of your uterus’ lining without conception. People who have their “period” during conception (or after) could vary from just spotting to bleeding heavier than they usually do when they menstruate, however it does not feel much different.

If you are pregnant, this bleeding may be a sign of a complication.

    Go to a Gp.

OK while it is quite possible that you AREN'T pregnant it's probably a good idea if you take a test to rule it out.

You could just be having irregular periods, which is fairly common. Maybe you should visit a family planning clinic or your GP to talk through your cycle and contraception so you feel more confident about everything.

As for putting on weight - you are still growing and developing at 17, I doubt it is anything to worry about...why not chat to one of the trainers at the gym.
