I am a mother of a 2 year old boy, who has exzema. I have made repeated trips to my GP's surgery, to be told time and time again that there is nothing they can do for him "He will out grow it"!!! (And it is making me so angry)

I am the one who sits here and cries with him! When i am trying to do all i can and massage creams into his body(while he screams like hes being sat into a red hot bath)The pain i feel for him, i can not explain.

Like any other mother i want the best for my children, i don't want him to suffer. Doe's anyone have any idea on how or if i can demand to see a consultant, he also has a reaction to some addative's in certain food's...... I just feel so useless. The only option that is left for me is to go private.

My son is well worth it but, i keep getting told that treatment is available on the NHS, and that he is entitled to it. Maybe i just have an inadequet doctor??? <IMG SRC="confused.gif" border="0" ALT="icon">

Well did they not even prescribe anything for him? My friends brother had ecxsma and used E45 cream, on the NHS, you can always ask to see another doctor.

I think it is very common in little kids so try not to worry too much.

Since the age of three months he has had E45, Dermol 500, Steriod based cream..0.5%, then 1%, and they have now given him 2.5%. Every time i take him when he has a flare up, i have to take him beck 2 or 3 days later for antibiotics! The amount of other creams and bath oils he has been given have not done anything for him....i just feel like i am going around and around in circles. He was refered to the local hospital when he was 18 months old, and i was told they wouldnt be concerened till he had it on the soles of his feet(How sad is that?)

I just feel so helpless!

God exzema can be hellish. It may be well worth your while getting a second opinion - another doctor or perhaps the practise nurse in the surgery.
Some doctors tend to see things like this just as neurotic mothers overreacting which isn't helpful when you're at home and your son is crying his eyes out.

If none of that proves helpful, it may be worth seeking private treatment if you have the resources to do so.

Also, just to add - some people find natural remedies, accupuncture and things like that helpful. It may be worth doing some research into some other channels for different options.

Personally I don't see the advantage of going private - you'd have to go back to the GP to get a referral letter anyway, and the O/P waiting time for kids on the NHS isn't too bad.

I think taking advice from the practice nurse is a good idea as they deal with these kind of things regularly. Alternatively, book an appointment with another doctor at the practice.

theres not a defintite cure for eczema, all you can do is use the creams which might relieve it. its a bit of trial and error really.

i had it as a kid, and it was really annoying, but i did grow out of it (although i don't really understand how anyone can "grow out" of eczema!)

it can be caused by so many different things. you said your son has a reaction to some additives? have you had a food intolenence test because he may also be intolerant to some foods e.g. dairy. if you eliminate what he's intolerant to it could help a lot.

also it could be to do with toxins in the blood, a herbal supplement called echinacea boosts immune system and also helps to cleanse the blood so that might help.

i personally wouldn't consider going private, but maybe see a homeopath or a herbalist who can recommend some really great natural remedies.

your doctor sounds rubbish, youre entitled to see any doctor in your surgery without having to change your actual doctor, so why not ask to see a different one and see if you have any more luck. creams like E45 arent likely to work on severe eczema, and your sons sounds very severe. childhood eczema is quite common though and most children do grow out of it. its so awful to see your child in pain or ill and not be able to do anything about it.

A family friend of mine also had really severe exzema which was very painful for him. The doctor prescribed loads of creams but nothing seemed to clear up. He was about 2 when it started and found it really difficult to sleep as it was so itchy and nearly covered his whole body.
It is worth getting food intolerance tests done..he found out that he was allergic to dairy products, and by keeping to non-dairy chocolate, soya milk etc it cleared up slighty. I think he is nearly 7 now and its basically completely gone, so the doctor may be right in saying they grow out of it in time. However it is not fair on him that he should have to suffer for so long while waiting for it to clear up. I have heard that there are special bath salts which you put in the water which soothe exzema very well? I think it looks like sand, but is expensive. Definetely try the food test as it might help you to determine what's making the exzema worse. It's just unlucky that some people are prone to it. good luck -x

Thanks to everyone who as posted a message, and since i posted the message i have really gone a long way.

I have called around and finally i am getting somewhere!!!! <IMG SRC="smile.gif" border="0" ALT="icon"> I have a letter in the post from the doctors to the local hospital!(wow) after really letting go on the phone and letting my feelings be known. So hopefully i should be getting a letter from the hospital soon with a date for me to take my son to see a dermatoligist and for allergy testing to be done on him.

I am also waiting for the community association to get back in contact with me reguarding a complaint about all the times i have visited the doctors, requesting help from them, and i have just been pushed aside and told to carry on with the same old creams and antibiotics.(I am not a nasty kind of person, but how many other mothers are being fobbed off with any old rubbish???????) When, as i have found out, you have the right to say what you want from the NHS and children are Priority.

My son is now totaly off all dairy foods(since tuesday), and he is bathing in dead sea salt, and using none steroid based creams to help him until we get the letter to go to the hospital(and he is doing well, after only 2 days of using the new products he is no longer screaming while he is being rubbed down, and i think he actually enjoys being massaged *dont we all*
