To be honest pretty much every town has youth hostels and I've never stayed in one that didn't have a good standard. Where abouts are you looking for a hostel?

i've stayed in some youth hostels (yha approved ones) and they were fine. as gwst says they all have to be approved so they should be of a reasonable standard. but don't expect 5*. ;)

The Generator Hostel in London was VERY GOOD.
