The Price of Life

As technology introduces new advances, it also brings along new problems.

How do you feel about couples conceiving a baby to save the life of their other child?

If their child is dying from some forms of cancer, it is possible to save their life with the bone marrow of a family’s new addition. Actually, that child may be saved with the marrow of any compatible donor; however, it can be tough to find a donor with a close enough match, especially if a close match isn’t already in the family, it gets rough. However, the chance of that couple’s newborn child being a match is one in four. To many, that’s a good gamble.

Ethically, where do you stand?

I think that its wrong, children shouldnt be bred for spare parts, how would they feel growing up that they were merely brought into the world because they were 'needed'

but...i dont have children and im sure if i did i would try to do anything in my power to save them, but i dont think 'designer babies' are the way to go about it

Im not sure, if it was conceived naturally then I wouldnt be ethically against it; its no more unwanted than an accidental pregnancy. But if it was cloned it would be wrong...

Its probably not that important a question, however, as a lot of babies with leukaemia requiring urgent bone marrow transplantation probably wouldnt last nine months.

And shouldnt this really be in politics?

I think that if i had a child then i would do anything to save it i mean what kind of a parent would it make me if i didnt try i dont think that i could cope knowing that i didnt do everything i could but i do agree with the thing that it would be vvvhard to deal wit the fact knowing i had been brought into the world just because i was needed and not coz i was wanted!!!xxxx

Firstly, Constantly Confused: PUNCTUATION child! Sheesh!

Secondly, to the point of the post, I'm in two minds on this sort of thing. On the one hand, genetic engineering is in very early stages. And I don't agree with so-called 'designer babies.' It could pave the way for sibling rivalry on a huge scale: "You wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for me", that sort of thing.

On the other hand, if I was a parent I'd probably want to do anything I could to save my child, including bringing another child into the world to save him/her. The knife cuts both ways.

Lanni where do you stand? People generally like to hear the poster's opinion too.

    I'm moving this to politics
