Only in the sense that's being discussed about the nature of society here which provides more opportunities of social networking and is generally considered to be more socially integrated. But that refers to spontanious support only. As for formal support, I'd bet that in the UK professionals are more supported because there is more conscience that these kind of professions are highly stressful.

Last year I worked in a specialised centre for child protection and - despite having been very well trained for it- I had to quit because the working conditions were just too awful. if I had stayed I'd certainly have developed a burnout syndrome. And this was a state-funded project, mind you. There is such a lack of conscience of the need for self-care policies among these kind of practices that many many professionals end up abandoning the field entirely.

Women make far more attempts to take their own lives, but men are much more successful when they do attempt it. Also men tend to choose more violent methods to do it.

Too simplistic, are you suggesting that a large number of the men who top themsleves are single?
Isn't that true? I know that men who aren't single also kill themselves but I thought that being single increased the chances.

I'm not sure that people kill themselves because they're single, but I can see that someone who is depressed anyway might take a break-up or the fact they aren't in a serious relationship more seriously than someone than someone who isn't depressed.

And I think it was Jim who mentioned that someone who is seriously depressed is not a bundle of laughs or serious boyfriend material at the time of their depression.

I believe so, women normally choose the pills route, which is actually quite hard these days and is more likely just to make you very sick than kill you. Men like the dramatic, hanging, shooting, jumping off a bridge that sort of thing.

Not getting laid or having a girlfriend is in part a sympton of lacking social skills. So perhaps this feeling of isolation causes depression of which lack of sex is a part but not the whole.

If you think of the men youve all known who cant/never get laid have a girlfriend, usually thay lack friends, this isnt always true but in the case of
20+ virgins I think it is largly.

I'm sure that's gotta be the case.

The only times I've ever felt remotely depressed is when I've been single for a long time (ie over 6 months) and feel unloved and that something's wrong with me that I couldn't get a gf, then as soon as I get one everything's OK again. All other stuff I have like a good education, family and job prospects I just take for granted, this is the only thing that can ever get me down.
