Through the civil service. Jobs such as working for the MOD, Inland Revenue or the Job Centre are Civil Service Jobs.

They had an advert in The Times, you can also apply via The Guardian wesbite, just search for MI5 under the job section.

    Good luck.

I don't get how that application thing would work.

    "Hey, what are you doing?"
"Oh I'm just looking on MI6's website for jobs."
    a few month later....
"Oh, I got a boring government job that I can't talk about, where I'll be gone for weeks at a time."
    "It's not MI6 is it?"
    "......erm......nooooo."

You just can't tell anyone that you're applying. I know someone who applied and didn't gt it for MI6, they weren't even allowed to say they put it an application. That way if you do get it they invent a nice little cover story for you to give everyone, and noone is any the wiser.

If by some strange quirk of reality you are actually serious about joining the services, you'd be best off deleting this thread. They tend to prefer discretion over broadcasting to to the world.

3 girls wanna start as a secret agent, because not everyone is cut out for the job, the MI6 gives each of the 3 women a difficult task. The first woman was given a gun, when she entered the next room there was sitting her husband gagged and tightened to a chair.

"Listen up, we want to see if you got the guts to become a secret agent. Use this gun and shoot your husband."

After 10 minutes of crying and "noo, I can't do that." The woman failed the test.

After 10 minutes of crying, shouting you hear a subtle click. the woman pulled the trigger, but failed because she nearly broke down."

The third woman was given a gun and when she entered the next room, her husband was there tightened to a chair and gagged. The door closed behind her. After 10 minutes she comes out again. "The fucking weapon wasn't loaded, so I had to tear out a chair leg and bludgeon him to death."

Noo you got the joke wrong :( the first two are male aplicants asked to kill their wives!

The pay isnt that good btw, and its not really glamourous work (think surveillance ala stakeouts and things like that). If you join the services they might approach you. I shall say no more, like.

    EBAY.

Yyou gotta bid on an auction, for something secret, then they come and put you in a bag, knock you out, plug your brain into a hi-tech computer which wipes it and inserts standard MI5 agent programming.

    True stuff.

haha thanks but no matter what i look like id love to do it for the actual job, not the glamour of it...

i havent yet seen casino royale but working for the MI6 is actually nothing like James Bond so im not hoping to live up to Bond's lifestyle!

A good way to make money:

    - join the armed forces
    - work your way up the ranks, preferably to an elite unit (royal commandos, SAS etc.)
    - become a personal bodyguard for someone in a middle eastern country
    - get paid £2,000 - £3,000 per week

    not too shabby...

Erm... apply. It wasn't that long ago that they were running adverts in the natioanl press - specifically the broadsheets.

But if you think it's going to be like Bond then you are mistaken. the majority of the work is mundane and most MI5 staff are chained to a desk someonewhere (whether that is in the UK or in an Embassy) and only a few are "illegals" operating without any diplomatic cover and they are likely to be military/police trained.

You don't need to work your way up to a Royal Marine, you can just join them.

well, your biggest problem will be...

    ME!

I'm also known as Matthiaschenko Schöpfoskowiski in the KGB and you will be on my hit-list... (for no apparent reason)!

Ahhhh, Mr. Schopfoskowiski, you are very naive in your words.

I am already on to you my Austrian enemy... Vienna isnt big enough for the two enough Im afraid. Im on to you.

They call me Pimpernell. Scarlet Pimpernell.

In all seriousness though, I read the job descriptions and you need a 2:1 honours degree or 300 UCAS points, but in any subject etc.
So i can still do the course i wanted to do at uni, and if my grades are good enough then i can still consider it.. the end of uni is a good 5/6 years away so i have that amount of time to think about it seriously.
in any case its motivating me to work really hard in school so that cant be a bad thing!
    thanks for all the advice.

It seems that you think it will be something like Spooks when most of it will be desk based.
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
well ive never really watched spooks so i wouldnt know.

but i KNOW its not james bond and i specifically pointed out this fact, its nothing like the glamourous 'spy' idea and im NOT jumping on the MI6 bandwaggon just because the latest bond film is out.
id just never considered it before and think it would be a great job because its so interesting, challenging and different.

Well you don't want to end up like this fella

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6164284.stm

If you want a challenging job why don't you do something where you help people instead of all this cloak and dagger stuff?

I'd have thought this was a much more worthy organisation
