British Films

Having just watched Trainspotting, I was thinking about British films. Can anyone recommend any good ones? Preferably ones that weren't made purely to make money in America.

Oh and if anyone else is interested, I recommend My Summer Of Love (directed by a polish director, but that's not the point). I also want to watch Young Adam with Ewan McGregor, so if anyone's seen it, let me know what you thought. Oh and Secrets and Lies. But it's depressing that British film is so shit generally, and not really even made for British audiences. So recommend me some films that'll change my mind.

Young Adam is basically a light porno with a weak storyline thrown in.

Children of Men is a brilliant UK film.

My favourite British film ever has to be Shallow Grave. I guess you could say it rocks my world :D

Also Withnail & I, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, Sexy Beast, Kes, The Crying Game, My Beautiful Launderette and there must be loads more but I'm drawing a blank at the mo.

Some of the most famous movies of all time were made in Britain like the original Star Wars and Superman movies..

Don't think there's many good British Movies though recently - I like the old ones like the carry on movies and Alfred Hitchcock's frenzy.

I hate "my beautiful laundrette" but Shallow Grave, Withnail & I, Carry on Screaming and Carry on up the Kyber are all good. Plus of course Lock stock, Snatch, etc.

i have heard Plunket and Maclene is good, but i havent seen it.

IMO there all jank, apart from British adult films.

Everything seems to be horrible about British films, the common accent, the chavi cloths and the sky is always dull.

Brassed Off is good, even though Ewan McGregor's Barnsley accent is awful.
    Kes is also a gud'un...

    The Madness of King George
    Shakespeare in Love
    My Left Foot
    Mona Lisa

Cathy Come Home - TBH I'm not sure this is the correct title but it a very good social commentary on 1960's britain which caused a massive outcry when it was released (ETA imdb link to prove i've not gone mad http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059020/)
Scum as everyone else has said
The early black and white Carry on Films - especially Carry on Sargent which is my favourite (as wrong as it may be i actually secretly fancy bob monkhouse in this film)
HELP - the beetles film - I love it so much but maybe i'm just weird - but its so surreally good.
    Educating Rita
Junk - I think this might have been a made for TV film but its very good and quite disturbing about teenage heroin addicts
Welcome to Sarejevo - very sad true story about the war in Jugoslavia - though just having looked it up on IMDB it might not even be a British Film but it is very good.

Secrets and Lies is excellent, and definitely the best acted one I have ever seen.
