I thought so but as you may tell from the other thread i've recently posted i'm having difficulties.
Currently i only get one day off a week (saturday) and if i go out friday night that renders the day pretty much wasted anyway.
Does anyone else cope with both and keep upto date with all the uni work?
I'm thinking maybe i might have to quit and just concentrate on my studies but i really like my job and dont really want to leave..

Depends on your course and your uni, and how much social life you want!

Uni regs as a starting point, you're not allowed, and the rules are there because they don't think it is possible for you to do your work properly and relax/socialise sufficiently and have a job during term time.

At the end of the day your studies should come first. Thats what you are at uni for. It is possibe to have the right balance though-I used to work in a shop in first year, which was easy to fit in-I just went in on a Sunday, did my thing, then had the rest of the week for uni. I now work for my university part time, I work around 10 hours a week regularly, and anything up to about 20 hours a week. It is just a case of getting the balance right and if you can fit it in around your course, I have very few course hours and a lot of independent work, so I'm pretty flexible.

While they have a good point - not ALLOWED? Is that just your course, or the university as a whole? Most Uni students I know would really struggle without a income.

University as a whole. We have fairly short terms with an awful lot of work crammed into them. The attitude is that there are hardship funds if needed and there is time in the vac to work.

it depends if you need the money.

i do but it involves me doing a 55 mile round trip to go home to work on a sunday. i'm in my 3rd year now so it's feeling to be bit of a chore but it's what's necessary. i doubt i'd do much work on the sunday anyway so good to earn some money.

why don't you work at a tescos closer to uni? or even get a job in a shop. think of the discount!

well this year i applied for a transfer as there are 2 tescos in lincoln. i didn't get one as one of them is only a small store and the other is 'undergoing some big changes' or something!

i get paid £9.02 an hour, i don't think i'd get that in another shop job.

it costs me £60 a month to run my car (petrol and insurance only) and i get paid £220 a month so i make some money out of it.

someone quite rightly pointed out to me today that i could get a lower paid job and i wouldn't be any less off 'cause i'd not have to pay for my car but i think i'd rather have my car.

I have seen alot of people do it. It is all about time managment. It might take some time to get used to but I believe anybody can do it. As little said, lots of people do it. It is also very similar to playing sports in college. From people I've known, time spent training is over that of a part time job. Juggling a job... 2 jobs, a job and a sport with school is very much possible. There will probably be some conquences. A little added stress, a little less time with friends but it is not life altering or big changes at all.

I go to school with several people that I know of (just in the two classes I'm in) now who have full time jobs (40 hours a week) and are taking school full time (4-5 classes) they also have plenty of time for the bar and a movie and they've said their social life has only been altered a tiny tiny bit. Also, my brother went to school and played football, with practices, games and training taking up more than 40 hours a week and he, along with all his other football buddies, had 110% of a social life still... even in his last year when he had school football and a job, still plenty of time for girlfriends and friends.

    That's pretty shocking...

Anyway, icey couldn't quite work out - are you saying that Saturday is the only day you could do part-time work, and you'd rather not because Friday is the night you like to go out?

That's cambridge for you. They had a rule about how many weekends you could have away as well, 1 in 4 if I remember rightly.

(is now hoping I'm correct about where scary studies)

You're spot on. The weekends thing is a lot more flexible, you have to be here a certain number of nights per term, if you go home loads for weekends then you have to stay longer overall.

In fairness you can work as long as it's for college as then they have complete control over what you're doing!

It's definitely possible, I work a lot of hours along with uni, and I don't get a day off at all. It's hard at times, but I need money for my travel, for my car insurance, driving lessons, and just general money for going out, so it has to be done. I love my job too, which helps a lot, and if I ever want a day off there is plenty of cover available.

How do you get paid that much in Tesco? :eek2:

I work 2/3 shifts a week whilst at Uni.

    I don't have a choice. I live off the money I earn.

Sometimes I feel as though I can't fit my work in but like others have said, its a matter of getting the balance right.

Yes it is possible to work whilst at uni and still do well.

I didn't work when I did U/G because I went to visit my girlfriend at wekkends a lot and I thought it would harm my studies.

I worked during my masters though and that was fine and I did very well i that course. I worked about 16 hours a week, mainly at evening and the weekend.

I definately would not do more than 20 hours a week, remember that to do well you should be working 30-40 hours a wekk on university. Also you need to be able to take some time off around exams.

It is difficult to find a decent flexible job but the money does come in handy as long as you are disciplined enough to still spend enough time on your course else you might as well quit uin and just work full time......
