Here i am once again asking for help :yippe:
ok what i want to do IS:
Put together a computer and connect it to my home network. I want it to be out of the way e.g. the loft but i want access to it.
I actually want to run a game server on it so i can remotely conenct and start a Counter-strike source server for example. I was wondering weather i would be better using a standard windows operating system , UNIX\LINUX or something else.
I have no previous experience with linux so...i dont know
If i used windows it would be nice to have a web interface at the ip i have at on my LAN so i can access it that way OR as a last resort id have to use Remote desktop of VNC.
SO what do you guys think if you have any suggestions on what would be the best way to run this that would be great!

I have a computer running linux as dedicated server. It's really useful for many things though I have never tried running gaming servers. The main way of "controlling" linux box is via SSH in my opinion the prefer mechanism but it is possible to tunnel an x-windows (GUI like KDE or Gnome, similar to Windows) session over SSH. However, if you are inexperienced with linux you could get bogged down trying to do simple things.
What version of linux would you recomend i download (link available?)
You say you are running a dedicated server? what linux are you running on this and would the one i would run be the same?
Cheers
If you're planning to leave the server up you can just set the "rcon" password and connect through any pc you want. Might have to look up rcon commands if you're not familiar with them though!
I sometimes use Linux at Uni, my supervisor is a Linux guru and there's some specialist apps under Linux like LaTex.
Well you were saying that you want access but dont want access in a way i'd say stick on xp PRO and remote desktop to it...
(I might nick this whole game server idea as i have got some computer parts around)
:chin: So you just make a standard computer and put linx on it?
Is this linux thing hard? and where could you download it:chin:
Lets see who can build one the fastest matt:wave:
http://www.cstrike-planet.com/tutorial/1/5
And here's where you can get debian:
ftp://debian.blueyonder.co.uk/pub/debian-iso/3.1_r3/i386/iso-cd
or
ftp://debian.blueyonder.co.uk/pub/debian-iso/3.1_r3/i386/iso-dvd
However you won't get a GUI anywhere, everything will rely on console commands. If you want a distribution which is a little more user friendly, perhaps try Ubuntu, it's derived from debian and is alot more user friendly, but that's not to say the learning curve isn't steep
O crapo, the only commands i pick up are from other people and matt:p
So whats this other user friendly one? and would this "OS" work with other type of servers like HL2?
Hmm okay then ill try that do you think a 40gig would cover it?
Do you have a link too?
Here you go : http://www.ubuntu.com/
Smallest i got is about a 6
Cheers.
I take it, its the server version yeah??
Edit: Well im downloading a server version so i just install it as normal?
edit: The server version will come with things like webserver and mailserver etc which you may not want though
But mines windows now
ETA: Given up with The non microsoft product and gone back to xP HOME
Maybe I'm being stupid but dont game servers require a lot of bandwidth?
You can get away with running a 4-6 player server on DSL, it's the upstream that fucks you up though. Also latency will be quite an issue, expect average pings of between 50-100.
At the moment its got Counter Strike: Source server know any others?
