i'm interested to hear alternative theories on evolution. there are so many vital characteristics missing from apes and monkeys.
why arn't all apes humans then?

The clue's in the title - evolution.
Same way as some salamanders are not crocodiles.
Apes are NOT what humans evolved from - they are a different solution to the same problewm - except it seems the solution of humanity was far more sucessful.
Both came from another branch back in evolution. Two different attempts at one thing.
that being so, why didn't the apes then die out?
A lot depends on environment. Apes living in a flat, grassy savannah may learn to use their hind legs to stand from time to time to view their surroundings, apes in woodland where they have no natural predators will have no need to move quickly, etc etc
And then as soon as one animal has an advantage over another (e.g. homo sapiens had greater brain power than the neanderthal who had brute strength), they are then able to take a better advantage to wipe the other out.
That's evolution.
Quite.
No doubt failed attempts did die out. I don't see a rule saying onl one of many different solutions can be sucessful? The seem to live well enough?
Hell, they are starting to use tools now as we speak.
Who the hell is William Shakespeare anyway?
they populate different habitats, apes dont live on open grounds they live in jungles mainly
