Argh! Have I picked the wrong course?

I'm doing Maths, right? I thought it was what I wanted to do.. because I'm good at maths. Was thinking tonight though, my main skills when I'm with my friends / in a group is actually coordinating everyone! I have fairly good communication skills and when I did young enterprise was one of the main people to get everything moving.

Suppose I'm just worried if now that I'm getting a maths degree I'm going to have less options in the future. Going to a drop in session on Wednesday for KPMG, I suppose I can speak to some of the graduates there. Anyone else had the same gut wrenching 'oh no I've made a mistake' feeling as I have now, just when starting their course?

Sorry, University hasn't got on with me very well so far :p there's this neat girl I met who I was texting, then she had to go and said she was going to a bar and I said 'can I come? :p' and she didn't text back... I never realised how difficult this would be. SERIOUSLY. ADVICE TO EVERYONE. Hope you're in accomodation with A LOT of people, because with 4 med students and a foreign student there's not gonna be a lot of socialising, which I've found to my detriment :(

You need to get over this thing you have that your accomodation has everything to do with making friends. It doesn't.

As for the wrong course it depends what you want to do, most things will take you with any good degree, I suspect KPMG will tell you that when you talk to them. When my dad recruits he looks for good degrees that show a person has been taught to think, he'd rather have a maths graduate with good communication skills than somebody with a degree in corporate comms.

Ah right. Just finding it a bit difficult at the mo. Might go out in a bit, but asked my housemates if they want to and they said no, so would be on my own, and it's always a bit daunting like that. Some dutch courage may help though. Then again, it's already 9.10, could stick on a few episodes of 24 and go to sleep.

But anyway, yea, just thinking because I like maths because it's hard and challenges me, but something like business studies I never did because it seemed far too simple... I mean, obviously it's not but I seemed to understand a lot of it without doing it. Sorry, I'm ranting. Just wondering whether an 'easier' degree would have been more appropriate to me.

At the end of the day it's your call, but you'll get a lot of respect in the future with a maths degree from York!

Yes. And it was a mistake, and I dropped out. Why do you think you've chosen the wrong course, just because you think you've limited your post-grad options? Or are you finding it too difficult, too easy, etc as well?

You're at York, right? So am I right in thinking you've not been there that long yet? The social side of things will come in time, honestly. I was so worried this year because last year I clicked straight into a group, and this time round it's taken much longer, but it does get there.

I dont listen to music :p but yea I know what you mean, I think if i get 1/2 drunk BEFORE i go out I will definately speak to people. But I never end up making friends, usualyl have a good time, wake up in the morning in bed on my own with some memories (and some blank spots).

Will try it at some point definately :)

Just because I picked it because I was good at maths, but my real skills seem to have changed... I'm still good at maths but I think now my 'real' strengths are teamwork / communication, I am good at talking to people and understanding what they're trying to get across, and understanding their point of view, whereas maths is all about the numbers. So many frickin numbers lol.

well, use your communication skills in other ways - you mentioned the student paper, get involved with that, write articles then maybe in time you'll get to edit a section. in fact, join any society you're interested in, most will love it if you offer to help out with the organisation side of things as well. and you'll meet so many more people - a lot of my close friends i met in societies and most times i go out, its with them rather than the people i live with.

Ooh yes, Fresher's fair. I hope you got lots of freebies, that was the highlight of fresher's week, getting free things.

As for your course, the first person you should speak to about any concerns you have is your supervisor :)
