was it right to expect 56k modems to reach 56kb a second? wasn't that what they were upposed to do

    No. They could transfer UP TO 56 kiloBITS per second, which is around 6-8KB per second. They often renegotiated the speed during the connection - most seemed to hover between 42 and 47kbps.

    Rule of thumb is KB/s = kbps / 10 + 10% - (kilobytes per second equals kilobits per second / 10, + 10%.
    56kbps = 6KB/s
    512kbps = 55KB/s
    2Mbps = 220KB/s

    By no means is it a hard and fast rule, but it should be a fair idea of real-world speeds seen over a good connection.

    'tis a brave man who argues with physics. :) Pound to a penny that the speeds you saw weren't being measured properly.

    I used tog et about 4.5kb/s and I used to love it if I got up to 6kb/s! Whe I used to use WinMX I sometimes got like 30kb/s :shocking:
