Would dyeing my hair dark purple stop me from getting on a PGCE Primary Teaching course? Or would it decrease my chances of getting on the course?

This is probably in the wrong section- sorry!

wouldnt have thougth so, uni's are full of hippies and odd looking characters. you'll be fine. when you do placements it may differ however, you do want to look professional and all that.

Personally I would have waited til after the interviews, it shouldn't matter but it's probably easier to make a good impression with a natural colour. Saying that if you do do it, just make sure its extra neat and tidy for interviews.

That's what I was thinking. I'm getting all worked up bout nothing as usual though, and just panicking as this could be my only chance to get in to uni.

Surely though it depends on the person taking the interview? One might not mind, another might be more conservative than the Pope.

I've just completed the very same course. It's always best to make a good impression and when teaching your professionalism as a whole will be under scrutiny, this includes the colour of your hair. Don't get me wrong my hairs gone all colours over my PGCE year, but never too bold.

    Ok, that's good advice.

How long will it take to be offered a place though?

Apply do the interview and then dye it, hopefully it should have grown out by th etime you start the course. If you want to do teaching etc its a good idea to go for subtle hair colours.

Do you know you definately have to have an interview? Because on my sort of degree you only needed an interview if you were a mature student.
Id say just do it, i find it hard to believe it would make a huge difference, and as freeallangels said, it will have grown out by sept if you are worried.
    Good luck me deary!

Don't want to be the annoying pisser on of bonfire, but a PGCE is a post-grad qualification, and according to your profile, you're only 18.

    Am I missing something?

Actually, I'm 17. I'm 18 in Oct. The course I'm taking is a Ba (Hons) Primary education and teaching, which will result in me getting a PCGE.

Generally a BA (Hons) in Primary Education and Teaching will give you just that, then you would have to apply to do the primary PGCE afterwards, unless the uni your applying to is different to all others.

I could've sworn that it did, but I'm not sure :) Oh well, I wasn't asking about that!

You want to be checking if the course gives you QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) or not, it'll say in the prospectus. If it does, then you'll finish the course a qualified teacher, and if not then you'll have to do an extra year PGCE. That's the only way you know for definite or not, it can be hard to tell one way or the other just from the course title.

If you're going for a course with QTS then I'm almost certain you'll have to have an interview. If it's an education course without QTS then it depends on the uni, I only had to have one interview when I applied for non-QTS courses, and that was at a college that specialises in teacher training, so it's fair enough.

However, I have no idea about the hair dye issue. Sorry!

Just checked it out Lil Laura-
'successful completion of the pgramme enables students to be awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), so they are fully trained teachers.'

Leave dying your hair until February, or when you've done all the interviews whichever sooner. Its easiest to persuade people your responsibe etc with natural coloured hair.

I died half my head neon pink the night I got my last offer.
