Changing Surnames

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I found this on BBC news.

What do you think about changing your surname when you get married?

I think I'd take the surname of my husband to be (the hypothetical one, that is!), unless it was a really awful surname.

I should think Sophia will have some opinions about this!

ETA and if a mod would like to add the 'g' into the title, that would be great!

I will probably change my name when (oops, should say "if") I get married.

If not I'll keep my own, I'm not one for double-barrelled names but quite a few of my family members have gone down that route.

I think Sophia would keep her own surname because she is not a feminist and likes being owned in the linguistic sense by her husband

Im pretty tradititional. I took my exes surname when we got married, but am going to change it back to my maiden name soon. When i marry nmm i will take his surname. I will be Abbie Madman!

I know its not particularly feminist and its pandering to a patriarchal society, but i still think its nice for a family to all have the same name, and I think its a pretty romantic thing to do. Its not law that you have to change it though, so its all individual choice, so it doesnt go against feminism in that way.

But previously you are "owned" by your father and his family name - not much difference if you ask me. Or maybe I just like my boyfriend's family name and want to steal it so am therefore making excuses :p

i like the idea of a guy taking the womans surname. my parent only have girls, so it'd mean our name would live on abit longer!

Thats very true. Youd have to go back a long way if you wanted to find the original matriarch name.

Like I said, I wouldn't keep mine unless the alternative was awful, or rhymed, making me Heather Leather or something.

The connotations of ownership don't really worry me, as I think most of those connotations don't exist in this society anymore.

Another thing - would you be Miss, Mrs or Ms?

I don't get why feminists are so bothered by it.

I'm a traditionalist so I wouldn't have changed mine, but if I was a woman I would have happily done so.

I liked what one of my friends did- he hated his name, but she wanted a new name for her new family, so they made one up.

You know she's gone back on a lot of the things she's said now. She thinks she was wrong.

On the Miss, Ms, Mrs thing

    Unmarried, Miss
Married with my own name (unlikely) Ms
    Married with his name Mrs

She did change the outlook of millions of women, though, so whatever stupid shit she's spouting now I can forgive (and when I met her she was lovely and hilarious). The Female Eunuch

I'm Ms now and will be Mrs if I get married, simple as :)
